So from what I can gather the best value upgrade from the manufacturers supply on a bike would be the wheels. As an entry level (Giant tcr 3) bike what would the best value wheel set be in price, weight, rolling resistance etc. be ? and does it really make that much of a difference.

Thanks in advance

It makes such a difference you will be surprised that you never did it before and everytime you put those race wheels on you'll feel faster before you've even cleated in to start the ride! Look for some deals at CTCT!

How much are you prepared to spend?

Best option is to track down a mate who has similar groupset as your bike, with some light race type wheels and ask if you can do a spin on your bike with the wheels so you get to feel what it feels like before you drop the cash!

Does really depend on budget. Shimano, Mavic or American Classic are probably best value factory wheels or find a good wheel builder and get some made-up.  Or Chinese carbon if you're feeling brave.  Will make a big difference.

Decide what you want - race, all round or training - and then discuss with a wheel builder.  If you go for factory wheels you are stuck with "patented" features which cause you to scrap the wheel in the future as the support fades quicker than the wheels break.

I am also thinking about a wheel upgrade. Do you guys know from experience whether the deals at the expo will be decent or over prized ?

Sorry for the hi-jack

Has anyone heard of and used Irwin Cycling wheels? Got introduced to them tonight at the expo and I must say I was REALLY impressed!!!

Awesome finish, 60 ratchets with 6 pawls for super fast engagement. The 38mm deep 26mm wide came in at about 1500g. Really really keen on a pair. Comes with 2 complete(8 blocks) sets of brake blocks, skewers and wheel bags.

Oja and its got ceramic bearings

Expo special was about R23 000 if I remember correctly

What you guys think?

I got some Roval CLX 40s on my new bike; took a bit of getting used to (it is almost always windy here) but they seem pretty fast; definitely light. Previous wheels were 2005 Campag Eurus...

Not sure what a set of CLXX 40s would cost, apparently less than Zipp 440s which would likely put the price somewhere between ridiculous and astronomical.
