I see it the other way round. Why are middle/upper class lives more important? This story has resulted in discussions about the state of the country and we've had vigils arrests and counselling...yet the poor girl found dead and stuffed in a toilet (on almost the same day) has barely even registered.

So this young middle class girl has raised awareness of the state of crime in this country?...can you imagine if we all treated every single murder in this country as major news...the government powers would be shown up for how inefficient they are and we can finally start to move forward

I think the murder of Anene Booysen 2 years ago probably had the biggest effect on the nation and the subsequent outcry that followed. She was not middle class.

Lives are all equal, but unfortunately circumstance, current socio-economic climates, media focus, brutality, motivation, and even somethings as unpredictable as social media trends ect all have effect on the coverage.

If I get hijacked and killed on the way home tonight, you guys would never know, and I am middle class. Class does seem to be a factor of media coverage, but it is not the only factor, not by a long shot!

Good point... Situation and circumstance do play a big role. I hope you touched lots of wood

Yup and so goes the story neh... The mother of the girl who was found in a public toilet wants answers why their case did not get all the attention that the Constantia case get.

As she should! I would never wish that on my worst enemy.

If New24 or IOL or EWN or SABC had to cover ALL our unfortunate murders, they wouldn't have enough airtime for anything else, and we as the public would have a more realistic imagine of our country's REAL current state.

..and we would no longer settle for being number 9 on the world top ten crime charts.

she might not have been middle class, but her eventual murder (she was alive initially) was particularly gruesome. Probably the only reason it made headlines.

History shows change happens when the middle class gets involved. Just a fact and not just apathy reserved for white South Africans. If this issue is allowed to descend into race then I fear we have lost this battle.

All the negatives for this being a class thing become a positive when you consider that if the middle class joined forces with other communities there would be significant numbers, available financial resources, time, and energy ploughed into taking this further.

Sadly catching these guys in a swift move may just patch a deeper problem that will continue to exist, and that's the demand for theft through *add all current political issues here*. When people return to their homes knowing these thugs are behind bars, the crowds disperse and we return to "normal".

That very same police is under the same national command, and ultimately the responsibility of the same national minister of police. Ironically, the Western Cape provincial government had to drag the National Police Commissioner to court to investigate the incompetence of the Kayelitsha police while he resisted and refused to admit anything was wrong!

There is no Western Cape provincial police, it does not exist, all police is controlled by the National government! The only exception is the Metro Police, which is funded by and under of the City of Cape Town. They are not mandated to investigate murders, that is the responsibility of the national police.

Short version: She's an idiot for making it a racial issue!

Agreed. It's disgusting electioneering.

I though O'Regan and Pikoli did great work on the commission despite the obstacles.

All communities are gatvol. Some can shout louder than others.

"Singing Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika, women and children from the low-cost housing development were joined by neighbourhood watch members and others in walking from Steenberg Village shopping centre to the corner of Lower Tokai Park, where thousands of floral tributes have been left for Franziska. "The struggle against crime is not only the struggle of the rich community," said Thebus."
