I ride my best in the 160's My heart rate is always 10-20 beats above my training partner. Have pushed till a 202 on a sprint. On the second day of the W2W adventure I could not get my heart rate above 160 and had one of the crapiest days in the saddle ever. Some oaks just have Rotary engines that likes to rev high

If it's different than before, go see a specialist

If you can't reach normal resting heart rate range, get to a doc

If your ticker is irregular or picks up speed without exercise, seek help

You were low on carbs on the longer ride, it seems. Were you fueling properly?

Short answer - No.

Long answer - I occasionally ride with only 1 bottle (750ml) and some food, to see my breaking point. For me it was about 120Km which seems to be the limit I can push to before bonking. Stupid? Yes!

It wasn't about me though - the OP was concerned with a high heart rate, which some of us have. And some have already said if the rate changes, best he goes and sees his GP.

The steady upwards trend shows it pretty clearly. You were going anaerobic. This uses more oxygen and thus increases your heart rate. That's also why you're still feeling it.

The wife explained it to me the other day - found it interesting.

Average HR at champs yesterday was 181bpm, max was 205 on the final few meters...

I am 37yrs old, little worrying so will get it checked out

No other irregularities, resting HR usually high 50's/60 bpm....

So, this has been very interesting thus far.

I am definitely going for a check up at the GP, just to be sure, but hearing everyone's tales is very interesting.

For what it's worth, I have dropped down to 111/112 kilos from 122 odd about 18 months ago, I HATE smoking (since I quit in '97), I cannot remember the last time I was pissed (actually I can, but I'm not saying), I take no drugs, recreational or performance enhancing, and I ride literally EVERY weekend. I have got to be a) either very sick, or b) have a broken bike, for me to skip my rides.

It does NOT help that the missus can cook up a storm in the kitchen...

Erdinger is also a new hobby of mine.

Is this THE Dr Wouter Basson?

Do as Wannabe and Halfdoesyn advises. He has been my cardiologist for the past 8 years and the man is brilliant. Ignore the crap you read in the newspapers.

You'll see significant fitness improvements (and a lower heart rate) by throwing in some midweek training as well - maybe even cutting down on the weekend distances in conjunction.

Try cutting your ephedrine a bit :P

Could also be anxiety or side effects from meds. Maybe pop a couple of Urbanol's and see if you feel better.

But then maybe just go see a professional, as medical advice from the bikehub is likely to be hazardous to your health.

At least it's free [emoji12]

A quick visit to a heart specialist could cost anything from R4000 to One million five thousand hundred and sixty twenty three cents.[emoji15] but it could also mean you get to see your children/grandchildren grow old [emoji3]

Comment for the guys that have mentioned palpitations.

Under extreme efforts my heart rate would race away uncontrollably, I would feel like crap, but it would end shortly after the interval.

This was indoor power training and happened about three times, usually when going max for 30secs from recovery.

The last time was just after  CTCT last year, but it never went away.  It also made me feel terrible, and HR was quite erratic, with the occasional skipped beat followed by a wallop.

4 hours later my wife to me to hospital and was admitted into ICU with a bout of Atrial Fibrillation.  AFib has a high risk of stroke, so cardiologist made it clear that they must not happen, and we went down a road to get medication that helped.

We were successful with medication that allowed me to train normally, without any further AFib attacks, until the beginning of this year.  Side affects of the meds were becoming a problem and I had a not training AFib attack that cleared by itself.

Last week Tue I had a procedure called Pulmonary Vein Ablation.  The Electrophisiologist found one of the Pulmonary veins sporadically firing electrical signals into my LH Atrium, which possibly caused the problem.

My advice, see a specialist.  There are too many stories that get around about this super fit guy that has a heart attack or stroke, and no one understands why.

Just my 2c.
