i scanned through two very different dvds last night - "kranked 6: progression" and "riding giants", the latter of which climaxed with laird hamilton's legendary waveride at teahupoo (check it out on youtube or hire the dvd). that wave rewrote the manual on the way big waves can be ridden.

it got me thinking about where the sport of mtb, freeriding in particular, can go. i'm starting to find the many dvds out there are becoming - while never boring - a bit stagnant and much more of the same. what i want to know is: what is the next big thing?

the only thing that seems to be progressing is the style of cinematography. "roam" was a revelation. awesome footage. "progression" is interesting in parts - i'm thinking ryan leech's (never boring) north-shore trials line and perhaps eric porter's "combo" run.

but if it's just riders hucking bigger drops or throwing more rotations over hips, doubles and bridges, it's not really going anywhere, is it?

I assume then that you can do a backflip superman seeing as the sport is not going anywhere.  I would like to see you ride mate and maybe you can give us some pointers on where freeride is going.

Last year saw the first 720 and double back flip.  Now they are doing all their tricks like tail whips, superman tabletops etc inverted.  How is that not going anywhere?

The Collective was the revelation, not Roam.  And if you want to see true spirit of FR MTB, then have a look at Drop in TV.

Big wave surfing will always be more dramatic and visualy impressive that MTB. even more impressive than large hucks and super steep downhills.

Aerial shots, cable cams etc are make the MTB films better, I agree Roam was of the hook. in terms of the next level, I dont think there is a quantum leap about to happen, just a gradual pushing of the envelope.

That is your opinion and you are fully entitled to it.  I just don't understand how you can think that doing a 55ft drop is a "gradual" pushing of the envelope, while surfing a 55ft wave is a redefining event.  It seems to me to be a similar achievement in both sports.  (Oh, and I have riding giants, so I can relate to what you are saying.)

A bike that can do the above with a "normal" rider at the controls...

Something like that gyroscopic people carrier that "apparently" does not fall over.

I'll watch big wave riding anytime and ride my bike anytime, just a pity I cannot do 1/100th of the stuff those guys do on bikes.

daft, it's not about what i can do on a bike. i posed the question as one who consumes the media and admires what these guys do. my point is that, at the moment, mountain biking, unlike big wave sufing, seems lacks to lack the big defining - legendary, if you will - moments. i'm thinking of epic rides like laird hamilton's barrel at teahupoo, chris bertish paddling into tow-in territory at jaws, riders contemplating 100-foot plus faces at cortez banks.

i love getting my hands on the new freeride dvds. i never fail to get all slack-jawed when i watch what voreis, porter, simmonds, berrecloth, romaniuk, et al get up to. but i got to thinking that, while visually astounding, that they seem to be sort of "varieties" of each other. big tricks come along - like, for example, the front-flip - but they don't seem given the "ground-moving" or, to borrow from foe fighter, "quantum leap" status that recent developments in a sport like surfing has.

I think mtb progress much more than say other sports such as FMX. For example, the whole progression on what can be done on north shore stuff, street, and dirt jumps etc, and now more recently slopestyle, etc. fmx guys just hit jumps and go bigger and flrip more etc. etc.

But I heard what your saying Holy roller, it will be interesting to see what the next big thing is.

Seriously though....just remembered that the new Collective movie is out. Watched the trailer and got goosebumps.....gonna go order it right now!

I think the more important question is "How are you progressing as a mtbr?"

At the end of the day there's a pretty big difference between watching someone do a backflip and doing it yourself!

As as overall: people will constantly be pushing the limits, so the stunts will get more elaborate and risky, but unless there's a new riding style evolving, I don't really see any groundbreaking stuff happening.

I'm it guys....open your eyes

i can just see the collective dudes setting up at tokai to film minty launching from a hip to a sketchy landing and scaring the absolute crap out of some sleeping bergie!WinkLOL

daemon, you're right about the fmx thing: the last big thing was the double backflip - watch it on youtube.

the last groundbreaking thing i saw in mtb was the frontflip. that it is a movement so contrary to the forces and flow of rider and bike is mindblowing!
