What Rear Tyre for AM Bike?

Hey guys, got a question... The tread on the rear tyre (minion) of my AM machine is wearing low and I'm about to order a replacement. I have a Hans Dampf up front & looking for something that will pair up well. The minion was great - I love the grip - but rolling resistance wasted me on the uphills (Hoogkraal, Meerendal... Whew!)

I've been looking at high roller, wtb vigilante, hutchinson, etc. I'm not too concerned about weight. Something that will be a good all rounder, grippy, durable, with strong sidewalls, and good in gravel & loose rock (Table Mt)

Any recommendations?

Im running the Onza Ibex/Canis combo and so far its been pretty darn good.

The canis has good rolling resistance and ibex has some aggressive knobs for good grip up front.

ditto +1 ...i prefer ibex to Hans dampf, seems to roll better with same amount of traction. Ibex 2.4

Rock Razor super gravity. The side knobs of a Magic Mary and middle knobs of a racing Ralph or similar.

Actually, I've been seriously considering the rock razor! What's your opinion of its performance in Cape Town's wet winters and also in dry loose terrain?

Read this review on CRC:

"This tyre is fantastic in the right conditions but not so good in others so it is a specialist tyre in my opinion. It works well on smooth, tightly packed soils where it is able to bite into the trail, it is very poor on loose sandy and gravelly trails because there is insufficient tread for traction."

WTB Trailboss on the back, flipping loving mine. Grips like hell too! I've got the Vigilante up front, wouldnt put that on the back though!!

Wtb trailboss 2.25.

Trail boss looks like a sweet tyre so me. But so many reviews on CRC say they're an absolute nightmare to get on & off the wheel.

Had no trouble getting a trailboss on amclassic rims. Also run the vigilante trailboss combination and couldn't be happier.

Those reviews surprise me cos its dead easy to get off and on....and seats so easily too.

One word. Fantastic.

Only place I find it lacking is on wet technical climbs where you may find a wet root and not have enough grip to get up (which is really a technique thing) or straight line braking.

Because of those magic Mary side knobs, when you lean them over the grip like shaite to a blanket. And theyre remarkably fast rolling.

I like them. A lot.

I am using the WTB trailboss 2.25 with the Tough casing. Bloody bugger to seat - other tyres would seat with my floor pump. Think the casing is so rigid that it does not want to pop out to seat without bombing it and it is heavy as hell :P

So I bomb it to just seat then swop to the floor pump.

The light casing Vigilante I have upfront seats easy enough.

Oh and WTB tyres do no sweat, seep, leak.
