Website or app to analyze training and workouts?

My only gripe (maybe I've missed something) with Golden Cheetah is that it does not translate my runs to "effort", so rather stuffs up my training load indication.

If there's a setting to get that going, I'd love to start using it again! WKO uses pace and at least derives some form of effort from that, however far off that may be when trail running...

Under Options/Athlete/Pace Zones you can input for both run and swim

Having looked at GC, Strava (premium and free) and Polarpersonaltrainer.com (PPT), I found PPT gave the best training plans, synchronized nicely to your training computer.

GC's training plans suck (there's only 1 for cycling), but for tracking your training it's pretty decent. If you find your own plan, you can create workouts and then go ride them.

Am quite impressed with Strava Premium's training plans and feedback. They have a very lekker Fitness / Form / Fatigue report that shows where you are.

I have been contemplating buying a Garmin device. I cannot make up my mind if I really need one or do I want one.

So here are a few questions. Is there an app that allows you to connect your smart phone to a chest strap which can then be used to record your heartrate to be down loaded and analyzed?

If so which one will give good results and what will the costs be in terms of data usage ext. Is it worth it?

I have a Cateye on my bike which gives me distance, time, speed ext which I am used to logging on a spread sheet so it is no hassle.

I have downloaded Strava and I have tried it out with my phone and it does not chow too much data while you are using it by the looks of things.

So all I need is heart rate monitoring and for that I have to fork out 2 to 3 grand by the looks of things as a bare minimum.

At this stage I don't need navigation.

So do I really need it or does my backside itch?

Any comments, links or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks for the advise.

I am a bit of a noob here. Is there a specific app or do I do it through STRAVA.

If I don't buy a Garmin which route do I follow?

Thanks

Johan

Just do it through Strava. Connect the Wahoo to your phone via Bluetooth, add it as a sensor in Strava and you're good to go!

Jip.

This.

And the Tickr is ANT+ also so if you, later, want to go the Garmin route, you can still use the same strap.

Golden Cheetah for the win. It's tricky to understand at first. but its free.

needs a few months of data before certain figures start to make sense.

also infinitely customisable if you have the time and patience for that sort of stuff

Golden Cheetah gives you pretty much the same info as training peaks (and is free).  Graphics don't look as smooth as TP, but the info is there especially if you want to follow your PMC

You can also upload all your garmin connect files one time.  Here http://www.sideburn.org/garmin/ you can download all your garmin connect files since the beginning into a tcx zip file which can be imported to Golden Cheetah

And if you want to live on the edge, get hold of the Alpha version of Golden Cheetah. Strava sync being the cool new feature (a way to get around syncing from Garmin), but also some other nifty things.

There are a few glitches - it doesn't work too well with laps, but I imagine that would be a general problem in GC...

Love this last comment on the issue in GitHub:

"The laps are now imported with d2c03af. However the laps are not in correct place."

Open source software at its very best ;)

Strava sync was available in the 1705 build but was buggy and pulled through a lot of wrong info on workouts.  I disabled it. Will see if the 1708 build is any better :)
