Let me get on the bandwagon..

I don't mind people TAKING THE RISK in buying something second hand and trying to resell for a profit. It's a risk as you never know the exact condition of second hand parts with certainty, particularly if you haven't used them and tested them for a while.

However, Christmas Tree recently bought a set of X9 shifters for R150 and Elixer brakes for R300 from a good friend of mine.

Before my friend even couriered the items to him he already re-advertised them for multiples of the purchase prices, claiming the items to be in good condition.

Now my issue is - how can anyone buying from him know that the stuff he sells is in good working order if he's never tested it (and may not even have it..?)

In certain cases the reason why the original seller sells at a crazy discount is because the parts need some attention.

I would rather require him to disclose that he's bought the items and is re-selling the items for a profit rather than to not say anything and have guys assume its his own stuff that he's tested..

Interesting....and yes I agree with you

Dead sure. Unless he just re-used my friend's photos.

Again, I don't mind what he's doing as long as he tests the components and are open about it.

I know he's only ever used his own photos to advertise the items before so that sounds a bit weird. Do you have a link to the ad?

I have sold a frame with multiple pictures sent to the buyer via whatsapp. He was very with the purchase. I have also bought a frame that was posted from Pretoria. The seller also sent all pictures of defects. When the frame arrived I was elated at the purchase.

Here's how all my transactions go down. If I sell. You pay first. Then I wait for the transaction to clear. Then I post. The same applies when I'm buying. I pay first and cross fingers.

I also do a little digging. How long has the seller being a member. What posts has the seller uploaded. And I check the messages on Whatsapp for any signs of dishonesty.

It is not full proof but that has worked for me.

What the buyer does with item I sold is not my business as it is no longer mine.

It makes me sick to do this, because I've always had good experiences buying from Classifieds. These transactions have always been done in good faith, and I've done plenty of them.

But yesterday this guy changed all that. Hanru Lubbe. Nelspruit fellow.

https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum/user/73980-hanru-lubbe/

Here's how it went... He posted an ad for a Reba - I phoned, asked about condition & stanchions. The answer was "in good condition & just been serviced". I checked him out - no sales but he's been a Hubber for a while. So I paid him. Fork arrives - huge damage to 1 stanchion. Terminal.

I immediately asked if I could return it. He said he didn't know about the damage and that the bike shop that serviced it had told him it was sound. Also said he'd spent the money already. So I asked which bike shop - the reply was that it was a guy who used to work in a bike shop, and he didn't have the number. Go figure.

So here's a guy who doesn't disclose fatal damage to a fork he advertises in good condition, not taking accountability - denying any knowledge at all, and then failing to provide any legitimate info on his shaky excuses. Hanru, I hope you sleep well at night.

If you see anything for sale from this dude, steer clear. He is apparently not a person of upstanding character, which is a great pity. He asked me to stick to the truth so there you have it. Folks, you've been warned. You'll see a Dual air Reba for sale soon - maybe for a grand. If you need spares, give me a shout.

Cheeses! Was he like "tis but a scratch!"?

That's pretty foul, sorry dude.

Sent you a pm.

No need to discuss this further here :)

Seems like many of you guys are good friends of Christmas Tree

Something that's been bugging me: what do you do about people who don't reciprocate the trader feedback?

I leave a lot more feedback than I receive. I've done quite a lot of deals on the hub and all have been positive thus far, so it's a little disappointing to find the feedback system used so sparingly in my experience. It would be nice to have a tag somewhere that shows that someone doesn't respond to feedback, as I'm rather tempted to delete whatever I leave these days.

It should be compulsory to complete, admin can enforce. An ad should not be closed unless it is rated.

Similar to eBay

Silly question around pricing.

I work on 75% of new online price if the item I'm selling is new.

45-65% if the item is used (% depends on condition).

I still have "long shotters" offering me 30% less that whatever I advertise. It's odd.

Perhaps I open with 200% of new or used price so people can bargain me down 50% discount and we're all happy....

I get the distinct feeling people are more keen on a perceived bargain than an actual bargain!

You're only allowed to receive feedback once you have >1000 posts, and of course the feedback you have provided to traders does not count until then either....

100% agree with you though, I'm also very diligent with giving feedback, but I do bug the guys on whatsapp / PMs after a sale to give me feedback, but after a while i do tend to give up bugging them for it.

I ask for feedback because I also give feedback. Most people won't give feedback if you don't ask them to do so.

Perhaps they do not know of the feedback option
