Bike Hub Classified section (or should I not go there)

I might be wrong, but I'm guessing most of the traffic on here is people looking at the classifieds so I disagree with your last statement. If they resell on Gumtree then there would be fewer items in the Classifieds which might actually reduce the traffic on here (theoretically)...

Someone needs to support the poor sellers here - all the suggestions are about making it more difficult to sell! Sellers are hubbers too!

I love the sellers on the hub, its the re sellers that are the issue that this thread is on about.

If you do not allow the reseller to buy the item from the hub then they cannot sell it on gumtree. Therefore the item would still be at the cheaper price on the hub for a normal buyer. My thing is using the hub as a mechanism to make a profit without paying for the ability to do so.

I try and support hub based shops/suppliers as much as possible.

I put two vintage bikes on the hub for sale for a friend, well below what they were worth, one guy rocked up and then heckled more and then I saw a week later selling it in the same condition for 3x more. what a box.

The other bike a hubber bought and the next morning I saw him riding it and loving it. I was just jealous I had sold it and not bought it  myself. I think that is what the vibe the hub classifieds is about, getting hubbers on bikes. Not ripping hubbers a new one.

Yeah but did the first guy's money evaporate when he sold the bike? If you weren't happy with the price he wanted to pay you could have turned him down. I'd hate to think that if I buy a bike on here I'd need to meet the seller's expectations of how I should use it. Once I own it I own it. I can throw it off a cliff if I feel like. And by the same token there are probably a lot of sellers who are really happy with a situation where their bike gets snapped up instantly, they get the cash and it's out the garage. But I haven't been on here a while so I might have missed the part where the Hub became a warm, benevolent, family.

Romantic violins...

People sell stuff to get money. Others buy stuff because they want it and they're happy with price. Willing buyer, willing seller. We're not a big, back rubbing community, we're all using the site for whatever benefit it gives us and the site, in turn, makes a profit selling our visits to advertisers.

Radman, yoh so jaded, you clearly have made a choice not to be part of the community, you are one of the leeches, thanks for the heads up.

Suppose the lesson is if you see Radman stuck with a puncture, man down after a fall just keep on rolling he doesn't want your help. If he asks for advice about anything, let him know nothings free and he must go visit the lbs for the work needed. If you see he's keen to buy something you are selling don't budge on the price.

Actually if you ask Admin/Matt how much money he made for the first 5-8yrs or so of running bikehub he'll probably mention he barely broke even, or had to pay in to cover server costs, no matter all the long hours maintaining and moderating the site and dealing with everyone's she1t.

Forums are labours of love by those that are passionate about the sport/subject, if you are lucky and the forum grows you may just cover costs, if you make an awesome forum and the sport becomes hugely popular like cycling has you may turn a profit. But it's still a job with many long hours and compared to what many earn doing normal jobs not overly lucrative, granted you may get to ride and test the latest and greatest, follow your passion every day.

Been a member since 2014... Why is the happy family of Hubbers not offering advice to that fellow hubber (who might just be a bit confused) rather than ripping her ad apart and mocking her? Definitely not the tree hugging, cyclist loving community everyone is fighting for on this thread.

I don't like the resellers trading for profit so obviously either and I do occasionally post sarcastic comments on their ads when it is completely blatant, but I'm sure the original seller was very happy to get a quick, easy cash sale so they do have their place.

No ones saying you can't make a profit if it's possible when selling something, no matter if you bought it off another hubber, it's buying repeatedly week in week out, with the sole intent to profit that is what puts peoples back up.

Just to clarify, if I recall correctly you and Christmas tree are mates or you often ride together?

That person is not confused, she is not even trying.

No picture, no explanation, nothing. If you think someone would pay over 2000 rand for anything with only typing 8 vague words...

So we have ascertained that there should be a detailed explanation, a high res picture, the price should be under R1k and she shouldn't sell to Christmas Tom (even if he/they were willing to pay R2k)?  :whistling: Just kidding, but surely it's easier to either give her advice or to just ignore the ad completely (knowing hubbers, not 1 person that has commented on the ad actually has any interest in the ad beyond causing trouble for the fun of it).

She also needs 1000 posts before transacting   :w00t:  :whistling:

I ride often with a lot of people I've met off the Hub. I've also given away a lot of parts to other people on the Hub. Once they have it, I don't care what they do with it, I wouldn't give the parts away if I did. And I really couldn't care if anyone uses The Hub as a side business. If members didn't get any value out of it it wouldn't exist. Free market principles and all that.

Radman makes a blunt, but true point.  Your lala land views about this magical cycling brotherhood of good and sweetness is cute but misguided.  Violins indeed.

And the REAL help and kindness comes from the quiet lurkers, NOT from those that constantly need to tell themselves and all around them about how awesome the community is and how amazing they are!
