Winter Training

the post wasn't directed towards what to do to prepare for winter riding, but more so towards what type of training 1 should do to improve during the months that we are not "racing"

Recently, all I did was ride, ride and ride. So now I have the chance the change the routine and focus on cross training that will help improve cycling.

Weights & functional training. Add that to HIIT tabata style workouts on top of your base mileage.

Weights being leg presses, squats, deadlifts, etc etc. For power output and strength.

Functional training being box jumps, planks, etc etc etc.

What type of gym do you suggest? Strength, power, endurance. My concern is also that less actual riding might compromise skill level......assume horisontal position.

true true. But me - weights being squats, deadlifts, calf raises and functional training. For power etc.

Then high intensity cardio stuff to expand the cardio capacity and overall performance. Then functional training (freeletics / calisthenics etc) to get overall fitness improved.

Then base miles on the wattbike or spinner.

Increased muscle mass might also not be a good idea?

For endurance, keep within Discovery's proposed zones for maximum gainz

Dunno about that, eh. Increased muscle mass definitely has a place, especially if it corresponds with an increase in power. Also - in my case it's replacing the gut. Or, trying to...

And there's nothing wrong with just riding - even if it's just coffee rides or long slow endurance rides. The intensity will return quickly.

Here's my history over the last 7 years - not everything has been uploaded, but it's mostly everything. Some winters I've pushed right through and the form was there, while other winters I did absolutely nothing, yet come November I was in some sort of form (that I was happy with at the time).

The first 18 months after my son's arrival I slowed way down (up the gradients! ????)

LOL. I don't do that all that often! No time / energy / motivation etc. That's what I'd do if I didn't have to work...

At the moment it's pretty much 30 - 60 minutes on the wattbike and then some tabata style intervals (20s max effort 10s off repeat 8 times) and maaaaybe some weights. Functional training when I have a gap.

Oh, for more time!!!

LOL. And fitness!? Only fitness I have at the moment is fitt'n this in my mouth. I struggle with following through on this stuff. Fine for a week or 3 then lapse for a couple months. If only I carried through with it, I'd be in a different position.
