Yes a lot of hate on this thread. Anyway just to clear up my OP. When I listen to music it is pretty soft, I can still hear what happens around me. As an ex-drummer, I now hate noisy environments so when I listen once in a while, I listen to music on low volume. Some songs help you with pace. Hell I don't even listen to music at home. But thanks to those that posted sensible suggestions.

There is no hate being spread on this thread.

Nobody is being ugly mean or nasty.

Most are giving good sound sensible advice!

There IS plenty of evidence that cycling with earphones "on" in your ears IS detrimental to your well being - it is a simple fact not an opinion.

YES the choice is yours.

In the Western Cape a by-law was passed about a year ago banning the use of earphones while cycling - with good reason

I'm not going to say anything nasty about cyclist with headphones , they are on borrowed time.

After sight hearing is the most import sense keeping you from harm on the road. At times you hear a vehicle before you see it, why would you disable yourself?

it's like going to a boxing match with your left hand tied behind your back.

I've got a solution for the sensible:

Cycle / run with one ear phone in, preferably in the ear that would be on the pavement side of the road. The few times i tried cycling with ear phones i tried this and found i could still hear what was going on around me.

On the road I just don't use them, it's dangerous enough without that distraction.

On my mountain bike at Thaba, where I ride alone A LOT, I ride with earphones and music. Also use the cable under the HRM strap trick to prevent it pulling on my ears [emoji41]

The minute I notice a rider nearby I remove 1 so as to hear if they want to pass. Never had an issue or anyone complaining that I don't get out of the way quick enough ......

I use a pair of R150 from hifi Corp. Rocka something, the one blocks wind out of my ears quite n bit. Reason for riding with earphones. I put the earphones under the helmet straps, in the front of my shirt and out. Phone in in pocket. Never have , problem with the pulling out.

On road, left ear only, soft volume, and only on very quiet roads. Never use them in a bunch. Off-road i blare both ears full tilt at Modders and Huddle, but only when I have the place to myself, and, wow. Indescribable pleasure.

IDT gets done full volume. I ended my workout the other day with both ears ringing when I unplugged, so I think, maybe its also not a clever thing to do, for different reasons.

The most sensible pic of Fikile Mbalula you're ever likely to see.

Having and sharing an opinion is not hate. Here's a happy dude for you

Never understood the headphones thing! I was invited to a run a while back. There were 5 of us. As we start running everyone puts headphones in the ears and off we go. I may as well have gone for a run by myself. My wife also tried that with me, invited me for a run then sticks headphones in her ears.

From a safety point of view I don't think it's a great idea. I like to SEE and HEAR what's happening around me wether it be on the road or in the bush

Cant comment on which ones are the best.

I do cycle with my phone's earphones,BUT only on the farm when I am by myself.

Never on trails or when I've got a mate or two with me.
