They suggesting you get into your start shoot 1 hour before the start. So my start is 07h15 and I need to be standing in the dark freezing in riding kit from 06h15. Is that quite necessary? Are they going to close the shoot so you can't get in your batch? I ride early mornings during the week and it 6am let's say it's more than "fresh" at the moment.

Yeah I'm in the same batch, my thinking is 30min, this isn't the Argus with 30k people, I'm interpreting it as just trying to get the masses there more than 29min deform they start, if I'm wrong then guess a later batch will be better than an hour freezing my nuts off.

The wet scaffolding was only dodge because people tried to walk up in stead of riding. Rubber knobblies has plenty grip on the scaffolding walkway surface (small holes). - IMO

Umm, not so,

I have very good tires and a great setup and I had a massive front wheel washout on the scaffolding under Tana road last Sunday when just turning in at low speed .

ICYMI: Steel when wet offers no grip and your knobblies are covered in mud by that stage. Any turning forces on those surfaces will see you lying face down on the steel.

Believe me those ramps are slippery and will be covered in mud and water, which will make them even more slippery...

Riding drains etc is crazy but dont assume thta steel ramps are grippy even with expanded metal sections on them.

Treat with extreme caution.

Especially steel ramps with hundreds if not thousands of wet tires over it - scary...

Anything wet and muddy is slippery! JUMA understands and acknowledge this hence their generic disclaimer instructing you to wear takkies and not cleats i.e. they expect you to bliksem down on the ramps and in the drains. So my interpretation of this is that JUMA wishes you to walk the ramps in your takkies and ride the drains without cleats and therefore reduce your risk of serious injury when you do bliksem off you bike :o

Very sane point of view....

So you get to pay a lot of money to walk your bike over obstacles you ride every other weekend?

Maybe I have just been lucky because I haven't had any issues going down yet.

I was actually thinking of going up. With the previous Juma riding up the scaffolding ramps was easy but trying to walk up was close to impossible.

That is going in straight lines - dont try to turn on those ramps or when you do make sure you have a foot out....

but the one i am referring to is one of the fixed ones that are in place permanently,  not the ones they build for the event. Even with Chicken wire they are dangerous. If you rode VG 24 hour in the mud you would have had some pretty gnarly experiences with expanded metal section with a raised serrated edge on it - even that was slippery as all hell.

Paul,

By the looks of things, you seem to be more excited by this event than the peeps actually riding it.

But I think your excitement is more geared towards hoping to say I told you so, on Monday morning.

Happy Friday!!

Probably the final edition before Health and Safety goes nuts and shuts this down.

Enjoy the ride, stay upright and out of the hazardous water!

I'll be in the beertent (or the ambulance)

So much negativity, you would think that Juma has forced people into riding! I can't believe how many are complaining about conditions, surely as a MTB'er you are familiar with similar conditions on certain trails in and around SA more so the people that ride the spruit.

The bottlenecks are almost in every MTB race you do, my suggestion would be to do more races to bring your index down so you can start in the earlier heats where there will be minimal to no bottlenecks.

For crying out loud people, there are worse things in life then having fun!

Walking up or down the scaffolding was more treacherous than riding it if you had enough momentum .

I wont be sitting your wheel, i'll be a bit further back watching to see how its done.

i was told by jumpertrax whilst sorting out my seeing ,that this year there is only 100 riders per batch as previously there was 200/300. Hopefully this will easy congestion for the later batches and make it fun for those going of later .
