I must say that it's been mostly Deon & Mark these past few months, as well as Meurant as the Chairman of Table Mountain MTB Forum and AMARider that have headlined in this particular derby.

The rest of us haven't been able to put in nearly as much work as those 3 - and Mark & Deon through tremendous sacrifice.

THEY are the champions.

.. gosh guys thanks but really, we are just riders too. This kind of comment puts me at risk of letting it go to my head. You want to see me then?

Hi Deon and the rest of the guys.

Now that access is imminent and we have pretty much got a "clean slate"

  • Has Sanparks signed off on the trail plan we worked on back then?
  • Is the plan to resurect the old trail system sans the trees or to work on the trail map that we worked on?
  • Have you guys managed to find corporate sponsorship to fund building?
  • If so who will be doing the trail work?
  • Is the trail work going to continue to be volunteer based?
  • Is Sanpark's view on outside material still so strict? Surely they should relax this in view of the current alien invasion?
  • Is the designated riding area still "north" of the boring road?
  • Is the plan still to re-purpose some of the old jeeptrack?

Very Exited now that I'm moving back South!

"No way.." that was your last words to me.. Don't think that because you are heading south again that you automatically qualify for all the answers. No sir.. you have to earn it.

So I'll ask you again. You going to join the volunteer builds sometime soon?

So Deon, Duane's questions are rather valid and I wouldn't mind hearing the answers!

Especially seeing as I live in the south, grew up in the south and learned to mountain bike in Tokai! :whistling:

I think when Tokai eventually opens, somebody or somebodies will be needed to greet each rider and inform them about the rules which should be strictly adhered to.

Are we going to at some point look at number plates for riders? Identification is needed.

Just for you "Önce upon a time ....." they did exist - gives away my age too though.

I can chat about some of his questions so you have a better idea where we are right now, in many cases the best outcome is still to be decided so be warned.

I'll start on a few short explanations and then we choose the best one to discuss further. Time is a bit limited for the "extended mix".

Keep in mind that the questions relate to a project that was interrupted by a fire so some of them have changed from our initial thinking.

"You could have at least mentioned you had a trumpet.. ?!" When was that dated?

Mid to late 80's before there was even thought of suspension on bikes.

  • Has Sanparks signed off on the trail plan we worked on back then?

We have started with the beeline study to identify sensitive areas on the mountain. The approved existing trails mostly align with the conservation needs so can provide a network until the proposed network is approved. It will be a different looking map from our original proposal.

  • Is the plan to resurect the old trail system sans the trees or to work on the trail map that we worked on?

Resurrect. It will be some time between the trail approval and the environmental nod. We must ride in-between so craft the sections of track that fit in with the future network.

  • Have you guys managed to find corporate sponsorship to fund building?

Yes and no. We have a phased implementation strategy with various interested parties already briefed but we are still a way off from asking them for input.

Early access could only be costed after we had some indication from the legal guys that it was possible. We do have people to turn to for support for rebuilding but still to hear how much each are willing to contribute.

  • If so who will be doing the trail work?

Two teams have been budgeted. Inhouse and contract. Contract is obviously more expensive so base work will be done in-house until we can farm some out for 'finishing'

  • Is the trail work going to continue to be volunteer based?

Yes. It should always remain ours.

  • Is Sanpark's view on outside material still so strict? Surely they should relax this in view of the current alien invasion?

You mean is it suddenly not a National Park anymore? They have a plan for the aliens and are pretty pissed they could not get started earlier. EPWP imploded on a national scale. It is starting up again and crews should be working by July.

  • Is the designated riding area still "north" of the boring road?

You were fat and unfit. You are now sleek and wear lycra. The boring road will take on a new meaning now that you can hit berms uphill!

  • Is the plan still to re-purpose some of the old jeeptrack?

Yup

That all sounds super promising Deon! If weren't stoked already the above should get us very excited about the future! You guys have done a lot of good work on the quiet these past few months. Well done!

However aren't uphill berms a contradiction of terms?

It's not a horrible way to spend a morning and you'll be surprised at how many of the baggies brigade are out there putting in miles and slugging espresso's
