I run a 9x1 ( 11-34 x 32 NarrowWide) its the bomb!!!

Start simple by just putting a 32 NarrowWide and removing the FD and Shiftter.

I bought a Narrow wide from Attie Lourens for a great Price... he makes the locally and they are Threaded so you dont even have to buy shortend chain ring bolts.

If you go 10 or 11 Speed you need a new RD Shifter and Cassette looking at around R2500

if you go for wide range cassette ie 42 tooth expander on your 10 or 11 spd then you also have to replace the RD again apparently

As far as I know you don't get the extenders for 9sp cassettes, so this won't work as the spacing will be out (slightly smaller gap between gears on the 10 / 11sp stuff)

Colin from Kalbo told me it should work with 12/36. You can use the one they make for a 10 speed.

On my son's bike which was 9 speed 12/36 we used a SRAM 10 speed shifter and 10 speed derailleur for more than a year and it worked fine.

good to know!

When I called him he did say first it would not work as there is no 9 speed cassette with a 36 max and that was the problem. I told him about the 12/36 and then he said yes, he forgot about that one. He thought it should be OK. In the end I did not use it. I bought the Sunrace 10 speed 11/40 which is very good.

Thanks for clarifying. If I were to choose, would still go 12-36, instead of 11-34 - would rather lose some speed on the straight and struggle a bit less uphill :)

However, my choice may be influenced by what i can find as well. Seems that almost all the local online stores stock the 11-34 option only. Can't believe how 9 speed is suddenly "old" - on 10 and 11 speed, there is a lot of options. On 9, it seems to be very limited.

I searched Shimano's technical site (si.shimano.com). If they ever did make 9spd cassette in 11-36 I can find no trace of it.

Regarding your choice of cassette....

12t vs 11t is about 9% whereas the diff from 34t to 36t is only about 6%.

Your 26er wheels also give 11% easier gearing (11% slower too) compared to a 29er when the same cogs are used.

Guys, tell me if this is a stupid idea, but why doesn't moe_7 get a 12-36 9spd cassette and just replace the 12t cog with his current 11t?

Was also thinking about this. My guess is that the range would be too wide for a 9 speed shifter.

I take it doing 2x9 should be the same as the 1x9?

Have been thinking of going 2x9 and not 3x9 any more.  But will do a fair bit of reading and searching before I commit.  I am getting older and fatter so staying with 3x9 might be an obvious choice.  Then again... I am itching to make my MTB a single speed bike...

There's another recent discussion on the Hub where I put pics of my daughters SLX setup. Hers is a 3 x 10 conversion to a 1x10, using the middle ring only.  It doesn't drop the chain with the clutch open, although we do leave it closed. My XT M8000 drops the chain  if the clutch is left open when heading over really *** terrain, and it is a 2x11 setup..

In short, you may not need to buy a fancy chain ring for the front.

I run a 1x9 on a singlespeed 32 ring up front no gaurd, and no fancy pants clutch rear mech either and it works perfectly. No dropped chains and no issues at all.

Me too, when setting up chain-length google  it there is an article that shows what the optimal rear mech angle is which keeps the tension on the chain optimal reducing the need for a chainkeeper or clutch.

I run a 32 in front and a 12 - 36 at the back on a 29'r

Very interesting read gents.

So my son broke his middle ring due to a missing bolt - a replacement of the same: R2.5k!!!!

Time for 1x9. Cassette is 12-34T. Derailler X0.

So do I have this right:

All I need is a 32T (he is a 12 year old) NW chainring and boom done?

What about bolts?

You don't have to replace that composite middle ring with same again. Surely there are cheaper 1 piece rings that can replace it.
