Please help me understand about outside assistance in IM.

A cyclists RD broke in a 70.3 race in UK and they were helped on the route by the official bike mechanics-meaning the bike mechanics fixed the RD for them. In my mind it is Outside assistance but then I get told that the official bike mechanics can help you and physically fix it for you.

I have always understood it to be Outside Assistance and the penalty is a DQ. The only reference I have is that oom Paul said so at a race briefing, but I cannot find the detailed answer so I can raise an acording to: Point 5.01.2. Sub Paragraph 2. I am right and you are wrong clause.

Is IM not about personal acheivement?

If the rules state that the official mechanic can help riders, then thats the rules? Doesnt really matter what it is in your mind. If the rider transgressed the rules, lodge a complaint?

That's always been my understanding. If you don't do it yourself, its considered outside assistance and you get DQ'd.

I remember 1 year, think it was IM2012 or 2013 it was mentioned that the mechanics can coach you how to make the repair (talk you through it), but they weren't allowed to physically touch your bike or something like that. There was also talk that they weren't allowed to physically hand you anything either. They would put it on the ground, and you could then pick it up and make the repairs.

Interesting question, guess it all depends on the umpire that see's it and how much of a stickler for the rules he or she is.....

This Oom Paul- http://www.ironman.com/triathlon-news/articles/2013/01/south-africa-paul-wolff.aspx#axzz4BSVvb4WA

But you made an interisting point, Let's Make MTB gr8, There are alway mechanics in the IM races and I never thought of it until now, but let's say they give you a tyre and you put it -instead of them then that is also outside assistance. But IM allows you to get equipment from them but they are not allowed to physically help.

I remember also in 2012 the refs DQing a guy 2km from the finish for Outside Assistance when his mate who had finished came back and run a couple meters with him.

Outside assistance really is there to stop people from being handed food/bottles/spares etc by people they have arranged to be there.

I felt bad for a youngster in an olympic tri I did a while back who came out of the swim close to the front and his mom was at the edge of the crowd, being a good mom she reached out to take the goggles and swimcap he was carrying and he instinctively handed them to her. That earned him a spot time penalty where he had to wait a few mins before being allowed to carry on with his race.

IM is obviously more strict in those regards.
