Wobbly Cassette body - Manufacture fault?

I installed a new SRAM GX 11 speed cassette about a month ago. Since then, I have been having issues with poor shifting. it's basically impossible to tune the shifter in a way that I get good shifts in the first 2 gears (i.e 42 and 36). It will always try and skip / click.

I checked out the cassette and hub freebody to see if I could have screwed the cassette on wrong, but nope, everything is perfect, no misaligned threads or anything. One thing that I did notice, however, was that once the cassette is installed and I spin it, there is a noticeable wobble. Nothing is loose, but it kind of looks like the whole cassette dances on the hub.

So this got me thinking, could it be that the cone (or whatever the cylinder in the middle of the cassette is called) that engages with the XD freebody is not straight? Anyone else experience something like this, or is this normal?

Is the cassette pressed all the way onto the freehub? With the xd driver it feels like it is on all the way but then requires a bit of force to give it a few extra turns which presses the cassette onto the hub all the way

Yup, It's on all the way, properly torqued and all.

I had a problem similar to this once, it was an 11 tooth locking ring installed on a cassette where the smallest ring had 12 teeth. So maybe the locking ring is incorrect.

I don' t have a proper answer, but it is more likely that there is a problem with your hub than your cassette.

Never had the issue with the previous cassette though, which is why I'm leaning towards the new cassette being at fault. Its a hope Pro 2 Evo hub btw.

Sram GX 11 speed cassettes don't have lockrings. It uses their XD system instead.

take the cassette off and spin the freewheel and check for wobble or play after this take the cassette in to a shop that knows what they are doing and have them inspect it

Please point me to this shop. I have had not been the luckiest person in the world when it comes to bike shop service.

Is your rear derailleur new or old?

If old, it could be bent resulting in you struggling to fine tune the last two gears (may also result in the derailleur hitting the spokes when in the 42)

If new, then check you derailleur hanger as this might be bent, all good bike shops can test this for you.

If neither works, remove derailleur completely and make it into a fixie, you know you want too.

Please elaborate.

From what I understand they need be torqued onto the XD driver, I wouldnt suggest just tightening it tight.

Take it passed your LBS

I was told that the bit of play is necessary for easier shifting as it will take up the chain easier...hope you understand what I mean. It kind of makes sense but I don't know if it's really the case. My cassette does wobble too and I don't have any shifting problems.

It's about 1 year and 3000 km old. SRAM X01. I inspected it. Doesn't appear bent and has no play either.

Maybe fixie is the way forward then!
