Contemporary wheel design

Good day!

So with all these Mavic Crossmax SLRs popping up on special, I have some questions.

With all the modern wheels moving away from the ETRTO standards, I am having second thoughts about purchasing a width not in-vogue. Sure i'm no where near the level that it matters but they are doing it for a reason and for some tin-foil hats it's just another money making thing! Are wider rims where it's at? Would I regret getting something older and thinner?

Another thing is the proprietary components on the Mavic... I have had issues where I couldn't get bearings for a Fulcrum and I don't want that hassle again. Do spokes and bearings go that often that this warrants a concern and I see that SLR don't even feature on their site anymore.

I also don't how like they look

The benefits of going wider are real (that's what she said)

But really - wider (to a point) = more support for the tire, which means you can run lower pressures, which means you have more grip and lower rolling resistance.

Depending on your tyre width preferences, some widths may be too wide.

For example - sticking a 2.1 on a 35mm wide rim (internal) would be silly, as it would square off the tread horribly and drastically change the characteristics of the tire. Doing the same with a 2.35 / 2.4 / 2.5 though...

So basically the hype is real... and no matter how good the SLR has been in the past, smart people have done their homework and it's better to buy a "cheaper/heavier/newer" wider wheel?

Wider is better but you also don't need to break the bank.

25-30mm inner width is perfect - I ride Spank Oozy Trail295 rims on my 29er and they give fantastic support to my WTB 2.3" tyres.

Build new hoops onto your existing hubs if budget is an issue. If you can spend R8k, get a custom build done with Hope hubs.

You won't regret it.

You mean almost something exactly exactly like this https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/184234-new-custom-built-hopespank-set/

'wider is better' - would that be for ALL riders? #ekvramaarnet

Yep.

Traction, rolling resistance, sidewall support. There's a reason even the DH guys run wide rims. The only reason that XC guys run narrower rims (IMO) is due to the weight penalty - if your rims have more material, it follows that they will be heavier than what you have at the moment. But the weight differentials are starting to close.

I just can't keep up with all the stuff that'll make me 'faster' demmit  :cursing:  - that's why I'm so slow, well that's my story and I'm sticking to it

remind me again which riders those are? I know of the one that tried that failed experiment and promptly went back to whatever he had before because it was working.

Anyone riding ENVE HV rims (30mm) or the normal M70/90 (25mm) and I'm pretty sure almost all of them are on 25mm plus internal width rims... "wider" in this case is 25mm plus.

That hurt  - am I not human if you cut me do I not bleed

You are not human, I can't keep up, even with you not keeping up... At the end of the day, I'm just happy to ride my bike, as I know you are too. [emoji6]
