Hi All,

So I'm looking to purchase a Canyon bike in the UK which will be delivered to a friend their ( they dont service South Africa yet ) for him to post on to me.

My question is:

1, Whats the best/cost effective/reliable company to use for delivery ?

2. If he " uses' it for a bit and then sends it on, will i be charged with vat/duties if he sends it to me as a gift ?

3. Suspect the box will be a mximum of 15kilos so what should I be expecting to pay fro delivery and should I take out insurance.

Sorry I cant advise on which companies to use  as its been along time since using any but I found that  using a courier company that has depots/branches in both the UK and in SA  is better as opposed to using a company in the UK only which may then outsource to a non reputable company in SA.

I would certainly get insurance regardless.

I'll probably look at DHL or TNT in that case.

Rock..if the bike is 'used' and sent from an individual and not a 'new' bike, does vat and duty still apply ?

technically if it is 2nd hand you would then need to apply for an import permit from ITAC and then still pay duty and VAT.

Rather help keep a local shop's light's on and get a nice winter special.
