Does it make a difference to tax if you receive your bike in ten pieces?  Then its not a new bike, its spares.

Nope, you will still pay 14% tax and ATV...

My understanding is that there is a duty on assembled bikes, but not on bike parts?

Yip, 15% on top of the vat and atv

Unfortunately there is no way I can get a Canyon in SA Rock so import is the only way...

I know that most of the local bike distributors get the bikes in seperate boxes ( frame in one and wheels and components in the other ) thereby bypassing the dutys.

Hi Lexx hope you can help with a similar type question.

For those of us living and working abroad and coming back home. If we send our bikes back with courier rather than fly with them.

Do we then still get charged VAT if we've owned them for more than 6 months? or are they classified as household goods when returning?

That is a very good question, ( in the voice of William Smith.)

If you are working overseas or in another country and you are bringing back all your household stuff, you can declare that bike and your Household goods under Form P1.160 and a DA304 as well as a Bill of Entry. Then you don't pay any Duties or Vat on your bicycles.

But it must be accompanied by your household effects. Otherwise it doesn't apply.

After my 2 year stint in the UK, I brought my new-used road bike with as check in luggage, it was my lucky day as strolled right through, didn't declare as I was only back to do the "world champs road race" but decided to stay on permanently after that.
