Can you use a tri wetsuit for surfing?

As the topic suggests, I've recently started to learn to surf and have always wanted to do tri's like the discovery itu cape town leg, but have never had a wetsuit. Would I be able to kill 2 birds with one stone for these 2 sports?

I'll keep you warm but not as warm or for as long as a nice 3/4mm surf suit..

The wax on the board will also ruin neoprene on your chest since most surfing suits have rubber on the chest to counter this. Otherwise if you've just started surfing and you already have a trisuit that fits. No reason to fork out on a flashbomb just yet.

Spring is also aproaching so no need to worry about chilly winter waters

The water tends to be colder in Summer in CT. The South Easter causes cold water upwelling.

Nice article, thanx everyone. Ja I recon thats a no go then, no way am I forking out for a tri wetsuit and then it goes to crap cause of the surf board.

In general ambient water temps drop both sides in winter.

But ya that's true. SE kaps the west coast frigid in summer.

Surfing at muizenberg at lunch time, the water is not that cold at the moment so enjoying it thus far.

Plenty of used surfing wetsuits for sale on gumtree and the like at bargain prices... not so much a tri wetsuit !!

Rubber in the chest of most surfing wetsuits also helps with you sitting out of the water on top of your board when waiting for waves and you're not necessarily paddling around. Rubber is far more insulated against the wind than just neoprene. More so when it's wet. It's often the difference between doing 40 minutes and having to get out cause you're cold or doing a proper 2 plus hour session!

yes you can, if you can handle the cold you can even go out in just a board shorts.
