When I did  my 1st "self build bicycle"

Did not know shaite  about steering tube length and all.

Bought a 2nd hand fork from a hubber. With carbon steering tube.

Thought I was very cool.

Got the fork and the steering was cut to short for my frame.

Selling my silverback 26" and bought a mongoose 29er......

Silverback is awesome..............................

But I am very biased in my opinion regarding Silverback.

Reading these posts are making me very weary of buying a 7 years old (second hand) full carbon road bike. That would be too much school fees should/when something goes wrong

In saying that, i love this thread - i'm learning a lot

For me it was buying a Craft Elite bib. The wide, thin leg trim stretched out after not more than 15 washes. They now look like baggies!

Even my 15 year old Santini shorts are in better condition although they are becoming quite see through in places.

Only if you pedal harder :) Or ride solely on jeep track.

Quicker than 26ers regardless whether you want to believe it or not....

Nope. Can't make a blanket statement like that without quantifying it with "all things remaining equal"

Geometry and rider proficiency has a far greater effect on a bike's "speed"

Yes - that makes so much sense which is why I opted for the 26er and now will never take hub advice again

Boutique type wheels.

Often overrated and invariably tough to get spares.

A mountain bike.

It gathered more dust in the garage than on the trails. LOL

What bikes were you considering and what did you buy, skubs?

And why are you rueing it now? Personally I'd love to still have my old sixer... And still have 3 at home (okay, one full bike and 2 frames)

If a lion was chasing you then you'd get further on a 29er than a 26er before you were caught and eaten.........same trail, same rider, same level of motivation
