MTB AR/orienteering in CT

Last year I did a Quantum Adventures AR ride/race in Montagu (my first one like that) and it got me totally hooked!  I really loved getting out onto tracks that aren't really there and having to find the route and checkpoints myself based on a map on the front of my bike that I had copied a route onto from master maps the night before.  I wish that I had known a bit more about it before jumping in head first (only decided the week before to do it), but that made it all the more enjoyable.

Since then though, Ugene has dropped that race and now only has The X challenge (multi day).  I can't find anything else like this in CT.  Is there something like this going?  I can find clubs in JHB/Pretoria but nothing down south.

Looking for something that's local and held on a weekend.  Even if its just a bunch of people getting together and not a proper event.

Anybody know anything?

Most of the Nav stuff packed up in the ladt 18 months.

WCAD used to run a few Adventure races, Jody used to have the Nav challenge stuff but it all died out through lack of interest and lack of sponsorship.

The interest will pick up again once EA has been given a home and the teams start squaring away in preparation.

we have permanent orienteering courses set up at mtb parks up here in GP and a fun MTB orienteering series, but sadly the numbers are low and I reckon this is why there aren't any cape races really.

As mentioned it is mainly the adventure racers that do this kinda thing.

If you want to do it, low budget with friends for fun we have a training thing we do up here which can be fun and is good training for navigation(important for the gps generation coming along who can't read a map)

.

NGI-ngi.gov.za will give you a digital copy of the 1:50 000 topo maps(maps used in EA and other adventure races) for free, you must just go with a hard drive and copy it at their nearest office.

We then take turns setting checkpoints just on rural dust roads and open land and often popping in and out of various local bike parks, mark them on the map, print the map or even just parts of the map and then nav them whilst running a gps to check routes and checkpoints afterwards, but it must be in backpack and out of sight.

You can do the same in mtb parks but just be clever when setting the CP's so you don't go riding the wrong way and pissing off other cyclists.

You can load KML files from the gps and these digital 1:50000 maps into a GIS program if you want to be very accurate in checking where everyone went. But that requires some playing around with GIS(which can be fun) can also be free using opensource packages such as QGIS. Let me know if you need help with any of that as I am in that profession.

THE PENINSULA ORIENTEERING CLUB PRESENTS AN ORIENTEERING EVENT ON 12 NOVEMBER 2016 TO BE HELD AT !Khwa ttu, FOLLOWED BY A STREET EVENT IN DARLING ON 13 NOVEMBER 2016.

PenOC, in conjunction with !Khwa ttu, is proud to announce a weekend of foot and mountain bike orienteering based at the !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre near Darling on the West Coast.
