Is anybody going to get ETAP when it (finally) launches in SA?

Also what are the implications if I get this from the USA while I have friends overseas who can bring it back?

Thanks

1. If someone at customs is jacked up, they can hold it at customs until the ICASA license for it is granted.

2. I dont think parts get hit with import duties

3. I think they would have to declare and pay the VAT on it.

4. No warranty or support from SRAM agents until point 1 solved.

Otherwise its chilled

Will the local SRAM guys support it, after it's been approved?

Damn I was hoping to avoid the ridiculousness that is ICASA.

I'd think that this is highly unlikely...

They held my friends iPad 1 for 4 weeks... Was shocked they even knew what it was.

That was when the Apple media machine had the iPad so visible. As good as it seems to be, I'm not sure SRAM has hyped eTap as much

They seem pretty strong on their stance, maybe a good idea to contact them directly.

"Cape Cycle Systems (Cape Town) is the Sole Authorized importer of SRAM Components into the South African cycling aftermarket industry.

South Africa has been earmarked by SRAM International as an approved country to receive the SRAM eTap product range.

However due to the nature of the product, SRAM eTap needs to be awarded Certification for use in SA by the relevant South African Government Body.

Such application has been made by SRAM but as yet the Certification has not been awarded.

What this means is that it is currently UNLAWFUL to use SRAM eTap in South Africa irrespective of its source. We will advise when this changes!

Cape Cycle Systems is therefore in NO position to entertain any supply, service or warranty requests or claims that any individual or organization may make to us. Such persons or parties will be directed back to their source of SRAM eTap procurement."

Maybe they want to dissuade locals from purchasing it cheaper overseas....?

Technically there is no "issue" in using or owning the E-Tap system...ICASA need to approve it because it is regulations (in SA) for any radio transmitting/receiving device (including an ANT+/BLE speed sensor and the like) to be known that you won't bring down an aircraft flying overhead or orchestrate a remote attack on "that homestead" in KZN kinda thing...may sound ridiculous but there you go.

The approval system should be relatively painless - as I understand that ICASA need to check that the frequency and power of the transmissions are the same as the manufacturer specifies. This of course may be hindered by some plonker looking for a greased palm by always claiming he doesn't have the correct documentation etc...
