popcorn_skollie Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 I get that the large scale of pines is a huge fire risk. Or rather one that is far more dangerous than just fynbos. But why eliminate every single one? Surely a few strategically placed pines could be left in tact?
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 I get that the large scale of pines is a huge fire risk. Or rather one that is far more dangerous than just fynbos. But why eliminate every single one? Surely a few strategically placed pines could be left in tact? There are going to be some indigenous trees planted in strategic positions, and the hope is that more afromontaine forest will come through in the future as well. the ironic thing is that Parks have no say over the cutting schedule. They're not their trees. It's a commercial operation, run by MTO. They get all the cash from it, and after the trees are gone then the land is "handed over" to Parks, who have a mandate to restore the fynbos to pre-pine standards. Parks themselves are lucky to get even 24h notice of the commencement of cutting... Linky... https://www.sanparks.org/about/news/?id=56866
Eddy Gordo Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 I do know that pines soak up and incredible amount of water. Will be interesting to see when they all gone how much water will be around

It's boggling.
(Deon) Posted September 3, 2016 Author Posted September 3, 2016 POSTPONED: TokaiMTB Volunteer Build Day 10th September. Sorry all.. the build day planned for the 10th September has had to be postponed for the new added date of the 24th September. Registration will be sent out one week before as usual. Sincere apologies.. Good news is that with the donations recently received, we will have a team of guys on the mountain in the week to pull aliens and reopen a few more trails...

But why eliminate every single one? Surely a few strategically placed pines could be left in tact? The problem with strategically paced aliens is that many of them are invasive. Granted you can plant less invasive species that are easier to keep under control, but it is a much better idea to rehabilitate the endemic species.
Shebeen Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Tokai has become a battleground (well lower tokai at least) with felling commencing on people's doorsteps, it has become a huge issue. The fact that it has been planned for donkey's years seems to have been lost on most who now want to kick up a fuss. Not sure what (if any) implications this will have on the MTB area up the slopes, but watching with interest. Shebeen Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 I'm really not sure what to make of this action, and consequences for greater tokai, and TMNP in general
dirtypot Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 As long as they keep the big swing, I don't really mind.If that tree holding the big swing gets cut down then I'll be pissed. I will for sure miss the high speed 100% effort blast from the corner entrance to the bridge through the middle of the forest. That's always fun!

This weekend trail build postponed cos Deon is on holiday and his presence is a requirement...
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 I'm really not sure what to make of this action, and consequences for greater tokai, and TMNP in general tokaiforest.pngQuite simply, either the community has to buy the rights to the pine from MTO and commit to harvest them by 2025 as well as provide themselves with public liability and fire protection insurance or MTO continues with the felling. Fokkol to do with parks
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 As for them not planting trees.... Guess those saplings that friends of Tokai, parks and us watered last summer due to the low rainfall were just figments of the imagination

I am actually impressed Parks are taking the abuse so well. Even I lost my rag at the methods being used to muscle parks into keeping the pines.
