if the PPA expansion strategy comes off - great - BUT that court judgement they got will come and bite them in the bum. the more they talk about age category races / juniors / overseas squads / sportives the more they will have to work through CSA or its local representatives. my goodness the PPA allow any rider from the age of 12 to ride the Argus on open gears - anyone who has any interest in developing youth cycling will know that goes totally against the advice of cycling coaches/health specialist and ALL the cycling bodies in the WORLD who administer the sport. hopefully the next PPA AGM will weed out the clowns who don't event know what UCI stands for.

I think you should stand for election. You have many answers and, it seems, the vision needed.

I would suggest Peter stand again, but I suspect he won't  :)

I am serious - if you feel this strongly, be the change you want to see.

Just out of curiosity, how far are you Capetonians willing to travel for a road event? If the South is not available go further north. We have nice roads for events here, but people are not willing to travel 300 km for a 100 km event.

I have long played with the idea to organize a road event here and have ppa involved, but you can not do it for 50 people.

Maybe a two-stage event on a weekend

With one stay-over town/area

That'll be feasible

Double century in two days ????????

One day flattish

Day two with some climbs ????

An idea. ????????????????

Agree with Dale, maybe if it is something big

Capetonians seems to be schizophrenic when it comes to travelling for races, we would travel half the country for a mtb race but don't want to drive further than 20km for a road race.

Given how the road races in Worcester and Bonnievale never really took off I would be hesitant to try something 300km out. That said, I see there is a road race in 3 weeks time at Piketberg which is about 120km out, would be interesting to see how many people drive through for that.

Not a PPA race - WPCA race - for the life of me I cannot find more info right now..

But it is on 25 September at Piketberg, 85km's and called "So you think you can climb?" - I assume we will be going up to "Piket-bo-berg"?

There will also be a 100km WPCA road race near Caledon on the weekend before the DC

Hijack - If only they could mail us our Road & MTBike race numbers.  I would even be happy to pay for the cost.  Collecting it at their office in the week is not an option and taking the chance that it will be a race is just that - a chance...  One should at least have an option to have it mailed/couriered to you at a cost...

You!

These races (out of town events Worcester and Bonnievale) probably only lasted as long as they did because PPA made them part of the league series. Thus the committed riders went out as they needed the point and there was prize money. When the league got dropped the race drew far less cyclist - the league were about about 300 riders strong excluding the tag along (parents, spouses etc) who may have done the riders on offer as well.

The racing cyclist like to race not to fun ride. The fun ride cyclist well some of them like to see there time against the racing cyclist - a symbiotic relationship. Road league dropped fun ride entry reduced!

Thank you Tim Brink for the words of support - if I remember correctly you once worked at PPA while I was on the committee in the 90ies. I would stand again but unfortunately it would mean a complete vote of NO confidence at the AGM in the current full committee and an AGM to follow a few weeks later when the correct group of EXCO member had been put together to serve the full cycling community this would need:

1. Some professionals -  Lawyers / Attorney and  Financial guys who volunteered there services to PPA and any work that was to paid for was never done by them or their companies. Unfortunately this have not been done in the past.

2. People connected / passionate in making sure the facilities for Road, MTB, BMX and track cycling were been looked after. Currently our roads in the WC are not in that great a condition to share the roads! I am spending quite a bit of time on these - waiting to see the results. Below some pics just (M42 near Pollsmoor prison). If and when we get fun ride back in the southern subs a lot of road that were use are now full of pot holes - maybe because event organizers are no long reporting these.

3. Some marketing people / entrepreneurs / ideas people.

4. Some MTB rider interested not only in riding / fun riding but also racing - to get the MTB event number up like we did with the road leagues in the past. To cater for young to old cyclist of all desires / abilities.

5. Some road riders interested not only in riding / fun riding but also racing - to get PPA road events back to where they were and even possible get the Giro del Capo back on the calendar. To cater for young to old cyclist of all desires / abilities.

Some of these people may already be on the committee and should still be on the committee but the committee person should also be equally “respected” to why they on the committee and a groups of 4 “man/fin” management finance committee should listen o the other sub committee instead of just pushing  their own agendas.

These have been reported to the City - what I am most concerend about normally speaking is the 1st meter of road where we cyclist are meant to ride and keep a straight line line pic 3 at the gate of the Pollsmoor. I hope the city attends to these within the next 10 days.

Once I seen progress on the above I will start reported properly other area which need attention.

Other items - the city still need to attend to on the M42. But have not reported correctly yet. I was lucky enough to grad some guys a few weeks back from a company called Collaborate to help with this. They were laying fiber optic cables on the other side of the road. Unfortunately unless the mound is moved bye the City it will in time fall all back onto the road.

Considering the condition I noted this article in the past week.

http://www.columbusunderground.com/share-the-road-columbus-bw1

"The City of Columbus is phasing out the use of yellow “Share the Road” signs in favor of white signs that say “Bikes May Use Full Lane.”

The shift is meant to communicate more clearly the idea that, under city and state code, bikes are not required to hug the curb or stay to the far right side of a travel lane “when it is unreasonable or unsafe to do so.”

Many experienced cyclists prefer to ride in the center of the lane, whether to avoid the danger of opening car doors in the parking lane, to increase their visibility, or to avoid the tight squeeze that happens when a car tries to pass a bicycle while staying in the same lane.

Catherine Girves, Executive Director of advocacy organization Yay Bikes, said that the Share the Road signs meant different things to different people, with some drivers interpreting them as directions for cyclists – that they need to “share the road” with drivers and stay as far to the right as possible.

The city’s Bicycle Coordinator, Scott Ulrich, said the shift was “in response to to a growing body of research – and broad consensus in the bicycling community – that this signage is the most consistently comprehended device for communicating the message that bicyclists may occupy the travel lane.”

Ulrich added that the different shapes and colors of the two signs also sends a signal.

“A yellow diamond sign is for warning drivers of potentially hazardous road conditions, whereas the Bikes May Use Full Lane signs are white rectangles, which are regulatory signs that control lane use,” he said. “We believe it is more appropriate to treat bicyclists less like potential hazards and more like the legal road users that they are, and to remind other road users of that fact.”

The yellow signs were first installed along High Street in 2010 – along with shared lane markings (or “sharrows”) painted on the asphalt – as part of the implementation of the city’s Bicentennial Bikeways plan.

Ulrich said that for now, the policy only applies to newly-installed signs, but discussions are under way about a plan to eventually swap out all of the existing Share the Road signs."

Pure Savage has found a nomination for the PPA committee, much older than us and knows the ins and outs of hosting events etc and is more than qualified to add value to PPA.

Just need to twist his arm a little more so that he will commit, as its a lot of meetings.

And then find yourself 300+ members to vote for him as there is already movement afoot to repeat last year's debacle of having the TMB club members turn up and vote from the list sent out by SMS....

Without taking at least 300 people to vote for your guys there will be absolutely no way they will be elected.

What you on about?

I'm a TMB club member, and I did not receive an SMS to be at the meeting, and for whom to vote for.

Statement retracted.
