Can anyone recommend a good welder near JHB or PTA?

A family member is trying to restore an old bike, but the frame is in pretty bad shape. It is steel, so as far as I know it can be repaired relatively easily, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good welder near PTA or JHB that can repair a bike frame?

Ping hubber Ampandy for an opinion - but my opinion is that it is beyond cost effective repair.

Go with whatever Andy says.

Thanks.

Looks pretty beat up, but I said I would ask, so here I am, asking ;)

I am not a bicycle builder, but after 35 years in the engineering game I am pretty certain that frame is beyond repair if you intend to ride it.

Structurally it is severely weakened, it can almost certainly be redone as a showpiece perhaps, to hang on a wall or as a bit of a fun job, but not to ride.

Can't recommend you welder.

However I quite agree with the other posters that this bike is done for. Can't be fixed to be ridden. Pretty sure that as Grumpy suggested that it could feasibly be repaired to be a showpiece.

If you have an electric grinder get a few compatible wirebrush cups or you could use light grinding disks and gently try to remove the rust. If you find that removing the rust creates holes then it's a complete waste. No way that the frame would be able to handle being welded.

Fully agree. Andy welded my chainstay when it broke and did a great job. Lekker dude that.
