1 x 10 range extenders vs whole cassettes

I got the 11-42 sunrace from Wayne at Rapide on both my MTB's and they are really good.

You will not regret the decision.

He also sends a longer limit set screw so you can move the cage slightly further away from the cassette and get a full free range of shifting.

Chain and cassette combo for under 1500 zars with next day delivery and brilliant after market service makes dealing with Wayne at Rapide an absolute pleasure, every time.

Having to shift up or down 2 gears to get the chain to move is more likely a shifter/cable/RD wear issue than chain/cassette wear.

I think that the problem is the cassette range is out of derailleur design specs, so won't be perfect. I am happy with it. The 40 ring seems to retain the chain and needs more of a pull to get the chain off.

Try giving it a bit more B screw to increase clearance between the 40t and top jockey wheel.... sometimes only a fraction of a mm is needed to fine tune it.

Both setups will work just fine.

I shifting is a problem the chain might be the issue not the new gears.

Always change the chain if a new cassette is installed.

I would recommend the wide range cassette.

The ratios are a bit different than a converted cassette.

11-13-15-18... vs11-13-16-19...

The jump from 13-16-19 did not feel right for me. The 13-15-18 jump might feel better.

Also check the sideways play in the top jockey wheel.

If the movement is too much this could influence shifting a lot.

If possible, try and find a aftermarket jockey wheel with longer teeth and no side play. This would bring it in line with what the 1x11 RD's on SRAM used bar the narrow wide wheel.

This is pretty much how my experience was. Pleasure to deal with Rapide.

The ride itself if very lekker. My only regret is that it took me so long to get my drivetrain to a point where i needed to replace it and hence go for the 1x10.

I have tried everything, one bike with the sunrace works fine, the other with the extender not. They both have same derailleur. The B screw is as long as it can go, it did help making the B screw longer, but still not perfect.

Reden may have a point about worn jockey wheel bearings.....that would definitely give your symptoms.

Also, the top jockey wheel is asymmetrical on Shimano RDs so check it is installed the right way around. One side has a ramp, the other a shoulder.....

I have absolutely perfect shifting with a Kalbo 40t and the 16 tooth filler cog. Set up is an XT long cage with clutch and a Saint 10 speed shifter. Adjusting the B tension screw to allow the top pulley to clear the bigger cog is essential. The bigger you go at the back the less likely you will get great shifting. I recon a 42 is the most you should risk with a std 10 speed derailleur.

I have new jockey wheels. Replace them often. I buy them on Aliexpress for about R40 a pair, replace them as soon as they look a bit worn.

Seriously, it is a home made cassette. It is not going to work as well as something Shimano designed in a lab. I am good with that.

Never had an issue with my OneUp 42t expander on my old 1x10 XT cassette and derailleur, nor my mates that I setup.

Shifting was always great, even compared to my 1x11 (11-42) XT M8000 and new SunRace 1x11 (11-42). Obviously the gaps are slightly smaller on the 1x11 but the ease of shifting seemed similar enough that I could not tell the difference.

Gotta be a setup thing man.

OneUp and these okes also spend a lot of time and moola in R&D :)

Max rated low gear size for 10spd Shimano XT deraillers as listed on si.shimano.com is 36t. Med or long cage. So we're taking them beyond their comfort zone with the converter cogs.

Interestingly the 11spd M7000/8000/9000 RDs are rated for a big cog up to 46t in a 1x11 setup. So the Kalbo 45t adapter for converting 11-40 cassettes is WITHIN rated design limits .

This brings your gear range within 2.5% of a SRAM 10-42 cassette without the need for XD hub driver or the expensive SRAM cassettes

I have the same issue on my 42 extender cog, it worked perfectly for the first ride or 2 and now i have to shift 2 gears to get the chain moving. Also thought it might be cable stretch or my deraileur bend.

I took the 11 tooth out of my XT cassette to add a 40 tooth expander.

I have been riding with this setup for over two years without issue.

There is a little more clearance between the 12 tooth gear and the chainstay.

Gear shifting is 100% and I can't see any damage to the free body with the nut torqued up against the 12 tooth gear.
