Late Afternoon Rides in the Cradle

I work in the Bryanston area and was thinking about training in the cradle after work, from about 16:45/17:00. During summer there should be enough light to get a 1 hour session in at least, maybe a bit more.

 

Does anyone currently do this? It would be great if you could share some more information, such as where to park, suggested routes and anything else helpful.

I do so sometimes, it is a bit quieter although I'm bit more wary of the traffic at that time for some reason. Ride all the normal routes that are ridden at any other time. 

 

You can park at all the normal weekend spots; Valverde, Avianto, Bidon, Riverside, Something Country (although it's a bit quiet and open for my liking) or the Rhino and Lion Park.

If you work in Bryanston, just factor in the traffic heading in the direction of the cradle (the Sandton exodus) - you could be spending that hour sitting in traffic and not riding your bike

Done it loads of times. I always park at Avianto if I don't ride to the Cradle from home. Great place to leave your car.

 

Riding at that time of the day....I've never had an issue.

I used to do it a lot.

 

I would drive to Something Country get there by 3h30 or so, change in the car quick.

Ride out to the caves, then up to past the Lion park to the Beyers Circle, turn around back down past Lion park and get back to the car around 5h30.

 

All in day light, and the safer parts of the Cradle.

 

Lots of cool hills for intervals too if you dont want to sit on the IDT.

 

You should try not do the section from Riverside(not shoulder) or Beyers during the week, losts of traffic.

I do it when I can. No reason why not. I park at valverde which is secure. Normally 1 or 2 cyclists around.

I cycle in the Cradle late afternoons once or twice a week. Never had a problem. Sometimes even cycle until after dark.

A while back there was a Thursday night ride from Valverde to the caves and back, followed by pizza at Valverde. Don't know if it's still going.
