As per a previous topic , this is more of a grumble than a rant .

So this past Sunday I raced the Menlyn Land Rover MTB race in Garsfontien .

There were 4 youngsters (20 somethings) ahead of myself and a guy named Casper .

At about the 35 k mark we catch one of these youngsters who has punctured , but is carrying NO spares .

He asks for help so I give him my spares kit compromising 2 bombs , bomb adaptor , choob , tyre levers and a spare link .

He says thanks , will see me at the end and return my stuff . I say cool .

Now , i presume he carries NO spares cause he knows some kind old masters cat rider will help him out . So he can ride his 9.5kg bike no worries .

About 5 km from the end , we hit the technical single track , where Casper (bliksem he is fast ) rides away from me . At about 4 km to go ..... yip you guessed it , I puncture .... Now I have nothing to fix the puncture with so walk/run to the end , losing 15 minutes and my 1st place in the masters category .

Ya I was a bit p...ed off , but it was my decision to help the chap .

So now , am I wrong to feel that I will NEVER help someone again , unless they have used up all their OWN bombs , tubes etc .

By the way , I never saw this guy at the finish , and he didn't even have the courtesy to leave my stuff with the organisers......

What a dick.

Dont give your stuff to some spoilt brat. I will help people with their own spares or something that I might have a few of, like plugs, but I will never give my only tube away. ESPECIALLY not to some knob who didnt take one because he felt that he would make up a place by saving 300 grams.

The only time that 300 grams is worth worrying about is if you are a coke dealer!

I have to say, I always just laugh at the guys not carrying spares. I am not going to ride 50 or 60km with spares on me just to give it to someone else and then be stuck without anything for my own punctures! As the say goes "As jy dom is moet jy sukkel" (I'm referring to the guys not carrying spares here).

As you said, if they have used up their own spares it is a different story.

Poor form on his behalf not returning your kit to you!

If you carry no spares and expect people to dish things out for you then your a fool, especially in a race.

It's awesome that you gave the chap your stuff to help him but look at what you got in return.

I just hope that when the day comes the he carries some spares and sees a stranded rider, that he will pass on the good that was done to him.

Ja, been there too. Even worse is training rides with mates who never carry spares. They too forget to replace bombs etc... Makes one a little less willing to help out.

Oh no, thats a different story. When I ride training rides with mates, I always use their spare.... ;)

That is not cool. I often stop to help people, but seriously if you in the prize money, why did you stop?

I ride with my son who carries spares, but doesn't know how to use most of them.

At Berg 100 race he punctures on the tar (like he says, what kind of idiot can puncture a tubeless tire on a tar road?), so my mate and I stop and plug it, whole field goes past. Later in the race he leave us for dead on a big climb and powers away to the end.

Anyway, in my case my lightie has so many mechanical problems, if I wanted to get nasty with him, I would need to wait less than a week for revenge.

Hi,

Thanks for the ride together Popit. Enjoyed riding together. Felt bad when I heard you punctured after we split. Agree fully with your grumble. You were the better man on the day. Just a shame about your whole repair being gone!!

I am all for paying it forward when it comes to spares and parts:

I have parted ways with many many tubes, bombs, chain links etc, but have also been on the other end of it. On a single ride up Breedts Nek I graciously recieved not 1 but 3 tubes and a patch or 2 from random strangers (Thanks random Choc couple). This came after wrecking my tubeless setup, and my tube with a few self adhesive patches. I was completely emptly.

I agree fully that you only deserve this type of kindness well after you have depleted your adequate stock of repair items. Regardless how good your help-me-puppyeyes are.

Must say I have learned the hard way by helping others out on the trail with my spares! Happy to help, but have your own tools and clean your ____ chain darn it!
