Only two of Italy’s four Pro Continental teams were given the nod, leaving Nippo – Vini Fantini and Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec off in favor of Polish team CCC Sprandi Polkowice and Russian squad Gazprom – Rusvelo. David Sims, who rode the entire 2015 Tour de France route on a Raleigh Chopper to raise money for charity is back, this time taking a fatbike over the likes of Mount Etna in Sicily and the Passo dello Stelvio, as he rides the entire route of the 2017 Giro d’Italia.

The 26-year-old, who finished on the podium in Italy in 2014 and 2015 and was regarded as one of the top favorites, has experienced a setback due to a knee injury.
