MTB tyre for road race

Seen alot of guys here using crossmarks for comuting, which I would assume to be 99% road, and getting thousands of KM's out of them...

They do seem to grip well on tar though. Have leaned around many a corner and not had one incident of slipping and sliding (dry).

I used some old worn ones when I last did the 94.7

No problems and it gets a few extra KM's out them with the price of tyres being what they are...

The best solution is to get a road bike. An old one will do.

The next best is get a set of 29" wheels and put 25c or 28c road tyres on. They should fit in your frame.

Hey

Been through numerous tyre posts on here and just wanted to ask. See the entries for stellenbosch cycle tour are out I may enter. Thing is I have no road bike yet so want to ride it on my mtb (giant trance 2 2016. Are there any XC tyres that I can ride XC races with and road training and rides until I get a road bike or should I just use 650B slicks? Running ibex canis excellent for mtb riding and XC but not sure about road so much, must be a better option.

Thanks

Find a cheap set of Raceing ralph tubeless ready tires - the non snakeskin ones - they can be run tubeless and will do fine on road and light offroad - nice fast rollers for road.

Get some slicks for the road races. I did the Stellenbosch tour on knobblies, and it was not pleasant. Got some cheap slicks (think they were about R200 a tyre) and did the Argus. What a massive difference

This.

There are plenty entry level 29er wheels around from guys who are upgrading their wheelsets. You dont need bombproof wheels for riding on the road. They will be plenty strong enough and a road bike tyre will fit right on there. The overall diameter should end up being very similar to a 27.5 wheel with a mtb tyre on.

Fitting slicks to the same size rim as your mtb results in a smaller overall diameter and it looks weird too.

Awesome thanks think I may take this option and try it out. Need to get another cheap wheelset so I can run tubeless on one so this may work well!

Thanks for all the comments everyone! Think first option will be 29er slicks for my bike second will be slicks for the 27.5 wheels and close 3rd I was thinking of Thunder burts front and rear tubeless and swapping out the front tire with my onza ibex or something with more grip for xc races

The ONE thing you will only do once is swap tubeless tires on rims back and forth for racing and training (it's a messy job and a lot of work to do even once a month (4 tires off, 4 tires on) ) ..... 2 sets of wheels - will be a lot more successful.

I fitted a set of road slicks - gator skins - on 29er wheelset and stuck them on my wife's 26er. yes that's right... 26ER!!! the circumference of the 29er wheels with slicks are the same or less than her 2.35 Hans Dampf / Nobby Nic combo. So there is plenty room. You could try run MTB slicks on there too as they are a bit bigger in circ than just roadbike tyres so you will get more speed.

That's problem #2 - Roadbike gearing is far higher than mtb with slicks... so you probably will spin out - even if you have a 44T mtb chainring road compact is 50T.

Yea i totally agree, swapping round is less than ideal! Thats why i'm thinking thunder burt front and rear tubeless and then just swap the front out if it slips too much on trail for xc. May then look at getting a road bike sooner

I got these, They roll like a mofo, and if tubeless under 10W rolling resistance.

Schwalbe Big One 29x2.35 (They make 27.5 too).

And do yourself an favour and get a second wheelset, and possibly even a different ratio cassette i.e. I run:

  • 11-50 11-Speed for Trail
  • 10-42 11-Speed for Road

Makes life a LOT easier.

Awesome I was actually looking at those from chain reaction. Did you buy them here in CT? Great that I can set them up tubeless too! Going to go for these def! Thanks very much. Just let me know if you found them here in CT...

Wont use them on trail will just use them for the odd road race
