Shimano 15T causing all the problems

I have damaged quite a number of ally freebody hubs on both road and MTB.

The solution for the MTB was a steel Freebody, problem solved.

However on the road bike and with a lack of a steel alternative I keep cutting the hub with the tooth, the 15T in particularly.

I have noticed is that on this tooth Shimano have cut away three possible connection points, distributing the weight over fewer contact points and this is where the damage is greater.

I notice that the Xt and XTR 15T still has all the contact points, the solution would be to buy a 15T XT or XTR tooth with every new road cassette.

anyone got input on thi s

You could find a freebody with the steel inserts, which will stop the issue as well. I know American Classic have these and they work brilliantly.

Otherwise, I guess the single sprocket solution will work too.

well that is interesting you say that, I have a set of AM, with these cut outs on the 15T there is no contact with one of the steel cut outs, as a result with the pressure on just 2 steel cut out, or strips the 15T goes through that.

the best solution would be if you could buy a 15T with all the stop channels in place

Good point about the missing lugs on 15t cogs from some road cassettes. Can easily see how that would increase pressure on remaining points of contact with the freebody.

Lotsa guys running 10spd 1x10 MTBs have converted their cassettes removing the 15t and 17t to replace with a 16t and big granny cog. Must be a lot of unused 15t XT cogs lying in toolboxes all over the country. Maybe a hubber can help you out.

the problem with second hand teeth is that you just cannot tell how much wear is on them, the last thing you want is to drop to the 15T in a sprint and have a slipping chain and land in the gutter.'

Ideally you need to start the whole cassette of fresh and have them wear together.

Why on earth has shimano done this, having one gear in the whole cassette cause damage

That's why I didn't offer my spare 15t .... it did some milage before the 1x10 conversion but there must be some new ones lurking about .

interesting observation and question. Ask Shimano, and let's see what they say.
