Sell Complete Bike or Parts

As most of you know, I recently aquired an awsome Trance Advanced that replaced my beloved Merida AM 26er.

The plan was to pass down the 26er to the wife and that way we both win: she gets a bike and I get to keep the Merida.

Since then, she has not showed much interest in riding the bike at all after my efforts to get her going. Now she is siting in the garage, the Merida and not the wife. She has not been ridden since the Trance came along, again, the Merida not the wife..lol.

Wife's friend left the country and agreed to sell us her Lady specific Trek hardtail 26er which I think would be more than adequate for wifey as she is not going to throw herself down the mountain but will at least have a bike when she wants to use it.

So, now I sit with the 26er in th garage and think selling would be a sad but good option. My question is this: Do I try sell the whole bike or rather all her parts?

As you may recall, the rear chainstay broke but was welded back together by an expert and has not given any trouble thereafter.

The Merida is well specked: Fox Talas 140, rp23 shock, 1x10 all xt spec with clutch RD, NW chain ring, Dartmoor rims with novatec hubs, Gobi saddle, xt I spec shifter, xt brakes,180mm rotors, Dartmoor trail stem 50mm and Giant bars.

What would be best?

Depends on the time and effort you are willing to put in. You will get more for the parts, but it will take allot of time, negotiation, and effort.

You will probably sell the whole bike in a week or two - but for less than what it's worth.

Well im in no hurry but concerned that by selling parts the money for them tends to towards other stuff or just get absorbed in the monthly expenses and i have a plan for the money.

Put it In a cash box and throw away the key ........when you have enough cyt it open ( and cut a slot to put the money inside )    :P  :P

Crude but it could work

I have decided to try sell the groupset first and the wheels and shocks seperately.

Would like some guidelines on what you think the groupset pirce should be. The lucky person wpuld be getting the following:

- Silver XT crank with Red Kitted 32 nw ring attached. Good condition. Crank has some scratches.

- XT Cluth RD. Great Condition. Pulleys in great nick and super smooth.

- XT brakes with original finned pads in excellent condition. Lots of life left in Pads.

- XT Ispec right had shifter with cable replaced a few months ago. Excellent condition.

- Slx 11-36 cassette, also great condition.

- Taya 10 speed chain. Lots of life left.

Extras:

- Brand new Taya 10 sp chain

- Both 180mm brake adapters for frame.

Im thinking between 5-6k for it. Its that fair? Will post pics once settled on price.

Also advise on suspension:

- Fox Talas 100mm-140mm. Straight steerer. Serviced about a year ago. Still 100%.

- Fox RP23 shock. Stantion replaced about a year ago and full damler and air can service also just short of a year ago. Works perfectly.

Thanks All.

This is gonna sound selfish but hear me out.

Get a hardtail frame and throw all the Merida parts on it for yourself.

Keep an eye out for something special like a cotic, one one or ragley.

Luckily my wife is the same height as me so when I bought 'her' a bike I made sure it was something I could use as well. I got a dirtjump bike. Its fine for her to use when we ride together which if I'm being honest is once a month at most.

Mostly she rides it in the park with our daughter. Which lasts about half hour till she decides to ride again in a couple weeks. The point is as versatile as a bicycle is, its hard to expect the same passion we have for riding from our significant others when they just don't have the same love for all things on 2 wheels as we do. My wife has her swimming club that she never misses. Despite us having a pool at home she still goes out to swim with her club at least once a week. It may sound boring to us but each to his own.

I specifically chose a jumper because when she is not riding it. Its not standing around in the garage. I ride it more than my trail bike. Short commutes to the shop and occasional tom foolery when I take it to the jumps.

You have to be honest with yourself here and ask whether she would even use the Trek and if she does how often that will be. Because if it spends most of its time gathering dust it would be a shame. At least if you build up a hardtail you'll have something which is a little lighter and more pedal friendly for her to use when she decides. But more importantly, you would still have a bike you could swing a leg over. Lift the forks travel up to 140 and have some fun on the trails.

Ofcourse this could only work if you and your wife are more or less the same height. It could come down to the frame itself.

Strip and sell in parts, put the money in a money box or keep a tally of it somehow, that way you sell all bits and keep the money separate for whatever you need it for

I hear what you saying and all good points. Injust cannot justify another bike as the Trance is a great all rounder for me. I just dont have the time to ride as much as i like.

The misses does not share the passion and have tried. May not even get her that trek but will see what happens. She is shorter than me.
