Solid entry level racer.

But checking out the actual bike for sale is important.

E.g. this one appers to be in good condition, but my gut says that R5000 is a little too high.

This one, aside for the shabby break hood covers, looks to be in fairly good cond, and at a good price. But the lack of detailed pic makes it a bit hard to tell.

Goes without saying to take a good look at the bike before buying. I presume that you know MTB bikes well. This can be relied apon to check the bike does not have anything expensive to fix wrong with it.

The bottom blue Raleigh looks like my dad's old bike. I had changed the wheels from the originals to ones that look like those in the picture. It was size 48 cm compact frame.

I had sold it for R1500. They are great little bikes, but don't pay too much.

Guys, some moderation here please.

You cant buy a complete groupset for less than R2000.

What make you think you can buy a whole bike for less?

Joop Zoetemelk (who started and finished the Tour de France 16 times) spent a lot of time in his career on a Raleigh. And he won the Tour in 1980 on a Raleigh.

The Microsoft Team dominated the SA scene for years on Raleighs.

My first new bike was an RC2000. Did close on 15000 trouble free kilometers on it. (and a few sub 3 - 94.7's)

No problem with the bike itself.  I am just not a big fan of the older Sora Groupset.

For the earlier statement about Ralleigh bike being bulletproof ... I don't know.  Had RC3000 and after about 45 000km the frame cracked by the seatpost.  Was replaced with a RC7000 which after about 15 000 km the frame snapped at the BB.  I then got a carbon frame with no warranty out of the deal and it still serves me very well.

This...

My old Sora served me well. Once dialed in, it stayed true. Shifting was slow and clunky, but hell, I did not know any better then.

Let us be frank here.

At best JZ rode a bike made specifically for him by a top custom builder at Raleigh, the venerable British cycling company.

More likely, at times he rode a frame built for him by his chosen builder, branded as a Raleigh. This was common in the days. Coors Lite, the first US team to race in Europe rode on Huffy branded bikes built by Ben Serotta. Lance Armstrong was one of many who rode titanium frames built by David Lynsky at Litespeed branded whatever their sponsor was.

In any event, the Raleigh bikes sold in SA from the early 2000s, had nothing to do with the UK firm but were Far eastern sourced frames  built up specifically for the SA market and sold at very attractive price points. They offered excellent value.

And yes, even when new, you could buy an RC2000 for less that the cost of a group-set.

I know because I remember very well buying a girlfriend the slightly better specced RC3000 in 2003 for less than the cost of a gruppo for my bike.

Her bike was a bit heavy, but it was perfect for her needs - 2x  94.7's  and an Argus before we lost touch. When last I heard her son had outgrown it so it must have been going strong for at least a decade.

It was a good buy.

Rumour has it some bought the Raleigh 'Team' bikes just to strip the components then sold off the frame ....

Especialy the first Team editions.

Dura Ace groupo, Zipp wheels, Dedaccai cockpit, etc. Components alone was more than what those bikes sold for complete.

Raleigh bikes are solid !!! I had one and my mates had those RC3000.... they are bullet proof and we did over 50 000Km on them at least... never had a days problem ! ...no literally never had a days problem !!!

I personally wouldn't go for anything less than a 9 speed... and I think that ones is 8, also I think R5k is a bit pushing it ! maybe look out for a 9 speed 105 Raleigh , I think they were the RC6000.

The RC6000 I have - bought in 2008 - is black and bronze-ish. Alu frame with Dedaccai carbon fork and seat stays. Full 105 5600 group set (10 speed, but the gear cabling isn't underneath the bar type - this was only introduced in 2011 with the 105 5700 - the 105 5600 series groupset replaced the 105 5500 (9 speed) series in 2007). Shimano PDR540 pedals, and Fizik Pavé saddle (replaced with a decent selle italia) with Raleigh finishing kit. Entry level bomb-proof Shimano wheels.

I reckon it's probably worth about 6K. Not selling it though. It's a rock solid bike and I love it.
