Wider wheels or fork upgrade first?

Hi hubbers, need some advice:

I ride a 2014 Trance 2 with the stock p-xc2 wheels (19mm internal) with WTB vigilante / trail boss tyres, and the stock fox32 CTD fork.

Which would you upgrade first:

Wheels -> 25-30mm internal, or

Fork -> RS Pike or similar

Keen to hear your views?

Hey Rich,

Why not both? I've got a Pike for sale and I'm shortly going to be listing my P-AM2's which are 25mm wide... DT Swiss 350 rear hub and normal giant front hub. They're in really decent nick.

Can make a deal to be a good price if you want?

Win!

What's your current budget? If you can't get a Mattoc (jokes) then just pick up Myles deal of the day and it's a win, win and just what you spec'd. Sell on your old kit and it's trail time!

Those Am-2 are pretty tough wide buggers and quite underrated. I tried to destroy some on a regular basis and never managed it. Spank are doing nice wide rims (30mm) and the old spikes / trails were always 25mm. People rave about the wide lightning but I've never ridden them. I'm quite keen to check out the Easton Arc's or the Kore Realms and everyone loves a Flow. :)

Heard that you should look to upgrade the stock rear shock before the fork on the 2014 Trance 2 as neither are that remarkable and the shock is more of a let down. But that could be hearsay, and it's hard to say no to a Pike up front (or Stage or Diamond) as far as I'm concerned! That being said, I'd opt for new wheels first. Unless you can pick up a combo option like Mr Mayhew is offering and it fits within the budget.

The fox float on the back does a reasonable job, if set up properly - it was the 2013 / 2014 CTD forks that were a 'mare.

Wheels then fork. But Myles' offer for both is compelling when you look at prices of new kit .... .

- Flow Mk3 on Hope4 hubs special at CWC R7k.

- Pike or Fox 34 ( top spec models) upwards of R17k

Yeah, and my total price for both wheels and fork is substantially less than that. Substantially less than the fork alone, for that matter.

Awesome, I'll be in touch Miles!

@HelloColour - erm my budget is going to be funded from my credit card overdraft, I have that itch...

i've just had to replace a bike.  Got a good deal on a wheelset (i think).  Between R8k and R9k for the wheels (26mm internal e-thirteen rims with hope hubs) from trailhead.  Got a second hand pike off the hub for R10.5k that only did about 15 rides.

Can't say which to get first, but i think if you shop around you can get good deals on both.  If you have hubs and just want the rims, then you are in for about 2k per wheel.

Just a note on the shock: if its not to your liking you can always just have it tuned. Either at Omnico (Fox agents) or Robbie Powell in PE. No need to buy a new one that most likely won't be tuned for the bike anyway.
