Maxxis Ardent?

I'm no weight weenie but I really dislike riding the LUST/UST versions of the Crossmark & Ardent. The casing is super think and heavy because it was designed to be run on full UST wheels, with no sealant.

Even with those "sturdy" LUST side walls it is just as easy to cut/pinch flat, right next to the bead.

If the Ardent EXO/TR and the Ikon 3C/EXO/TR are not "sturdy" enough, then put a bit more air in.

^^^^^^^^^^^^

Everything he said.

Standard LUST 2.25 Ardent is a tough reliable tyre with reasonably good performance. I rode a pair for over a year and they still have more than 50% tread. There are tyres that are both grippier and faster rolling but if you got them at the CWC Black Friday price (which was under R400 ea iirc) then its hard to do better for that money. enjoy. They are safer at rear than in front. I found them prone to washing out when pushed hard in corners on various surfaces which is why I prefer them as a rear tyre where they can't do as much evil.

Latest update: I settled for the BARZO rear.tyre arrived today and its 2.1 although the site said 2.25. Im rather disappointed considering this is the second time the order is a mess. I have requested the Ardents back.

On the brighter side, the Ardent on front is a beast of a tyre.rode Northerns red trail this past weekend and it just kept on going. No grip issues and rolled over almost anything. The current Schwalbes on the rear was a slithering snake of note. Can't wait to change them.

Barzo front saguaro rear. I ride normal ardent 2.2 front and rear but in nam we have a lot of sand and lime stone so the added volume and protection is a must

Agree with this

The normal Ardent weighs 895g per tyre, which is quite heavy.

The Saguaro in its heaviest casing is more than 100g lighter than the Ardent UST LUST as is the Barzo.

is this a mess from CWC again? or a different provider?

Recently bought the EXO/TR 2.3 Ikon and Ardent Race from Sprocket & Jack.

Ardent for the front and Ikon for the rear, was a bit apprehensive at first but am happy with my decision as I find they work as a great all round combo and the 2.3 volume is great on longer rides still. Recently spent a week in Stanford averaging about 5 hours riding each day and no issues.

Depending on terrain, would even consider an Ikon 2.3 front/rear for slightly faster rolling.

Very personal thing with tyres and rim widths also play a part, but I like the versatility that a 2.3 volume brings with it. Subtle difference but a 'game changer boet'

Does anyone else find that Vittoria tires 'age' really quickly?

I put a brand new Ardent (I love them by the way. Run them front and back and they do everything you need them to do) and a Barzo on the back at the same time.

I rode them both for about 400km (not a skidder) and put the 29er away for a while in order to play on the very fun 650b trail monster hardtail I have.

I pulled the wheelset out of the room the other day and the Ardent is still good to go.... the Barzo looks like someone has been riding it non stop through the free state... Droopy, sad, pitted and it lust looks old.

Both tires still have those wormy rubber bits on/next to the side knobs that generally mean the tire is still 'new'....

I remember the same thing hapening to a set of Seguaro's I used, pulled off then tried to put back on 2 months later....

Is it the sea air? Do I have a naughty elf who makes shoes and rides my stored tires or is the Vittoria rubber just not that lasting?

i'm running normal Ardent on the front and back at the moment after being on the WTB train for a while (used to have Wolverine upfront and Trail boss at the back).  I like the Ardent more, running 2.2" on wide rims makes them quite grippy with acceptable rolling resistance IMO

Hey! So i fitted a pair of Geax Saguaro's a few seasons ago. They went well and were strong.

They didnt seat particularly well, but when they did seat, they lost comparatively less pressure as opposed to my current Maxxis Ikon (rear). Also, they were a #$&@^ to try and take off and on my Wheelset. However, I was happy with them!

I did notice however that the rear Saguaro lost its tread, and its sidewall strength comparatively quicker than the front one, but thats probably because its 120tpi, and not 60tpi.

A few seasons on, I am still using the Saguaro as my front tyre, eventhough my rear Saguaro packed up and died latish last year--- irreparable sidewall tear. I have a Maxxis Ardent Race waiting in the wings to replace the Saguaro... when it eventually packs up. But so far, it has proved ultra resilient as a front tyre (tiger stripes and all)

A bit of advice please.

I'm looking for a new rear tyre for my hardtail, and I'm a bit torn between the Ardent and the Ardent Race. Both in the EXO casing.

http://www.pinned.co.za/maxxis-ardent-race-27-x-2.35-tyre.html

Obviously want something fast-rolling as it is for the rear, but would prefer something with a bit more puncture resistant and grip in the turns. Just a bit worried that the standard Ardent is a bit over-kill for the rear and will have too much drag. But then also concerned the Race is not as puncture resistant (although it is in the EXO casing).

Just for background, I have a Spez Purgatory Grid upfront, and was looking for a Ground Control Grid for the rear, but there doesn't seem to be stock around.

Cheers in advance
