Tubular vs Clincher - What is your preference and why?

You are missing a trock here... sealant can be installed in clincher tubes too.... try it - you might revert back to clinchers...

Hey V12, I definitely didn't miss that trock (trick ;), and in fact I also bring in the self-sealing tubes by Velowurks as well. You're right, very effective indeed and I sell hundreds of them a month.

It doesn't work as well as the sealant in the tubbies though, and I state this categorically because most of the people I ride with ride clinchers and even with the sealant in the tubes (Velowurks & "other") their tubes eventually need replacing sooner than my tubbies do. I think this has to do with the added movement between the tube and the tyre compared to a tubby, that tends to continually break the seal created by the sealant, and therefore the tubes eventually run out of sealant from the constant resealing, and subsequent leakage.

So no, not going back to clinchers any time soon  ;)

the difference is ive already spent my money on a solution that works for me

and you asked opinions

and I gave mine

and im sorry it doesn't support yours

but maybe I don't want to buy into your opinion

that's life mate

Hey Pal, I don't mind if you have a different opinion to me. In fact that's the nice thing about an opinion, it can't be wrong...

I was just pressing for a better understanding of why you felt anything other than your clincher preference was "complicating" it.

But if you're happy with your clinchers that's cool

I'm probably somewhat biased.....love my Token C28 clinchers but I do miss my tubbies. Only downside for me was riding 11bar 22mm tubbies felt fast but not comfortable. Had one puncture in 2+ years with tubs and used canister with sealant to get home. I suspect there's plenty stories going around, not necessarily all true. Similar to carbon MTB wheels pretzelling & pros only riding alloy bars etc

Why do you miss the tubbies?

Why do you miss the tubbies?

Lighter (1900g incl. cassette, skewers & tyres), felt more responsive and solid feel which could be due to higher tyre pressures.

oops - typo on small screen...

Sealant generally dries out after a while- needs to be topped up a bit every few months as regular maintenance - can't say I have any evidence that points to some tubes being better than others for this- but some sealants definitely seem to work better than others - been using Stans Race sealant for a year now - so far so good. Haven't tried the Velowurks but there is no specific reason why not - mostly my family and mates give me sealant or whiskey on high days and holidays.... socks too come to think of it...

Agree 100% regarding Stans in a tubby, bad idea! But then that's not what it's designed for I suppose :-)

Interesting about Stans.  I bought a tubbie wheelset 2 years ago. Second hand with some Conti's installed and was told that some sealant was added.

Since then I topped up with Stans twice after the rear went flat.  Been perfect after that.  Wheelset is used for races.

What is the issue Stans - not compatible with the inner tube?

I've found that Stans dries up rather quickly compared to other sealants. And the old Stans was quite thin. Stuff like for instance sludge and some other brands have little fibers in the sealant that, in my opinion, seals a little better. But as far as I know, the new Stans race sealant has something similar. But this is just what I have experienced, it's not based on any studies or research.

Fair comment. We didn't anticipate such a demand, but finally received confirmation that our back-order is ready for dispatch, so should be available next week

Got a couple of demo / 1yr old sets with new TBT Ceramic bearings going for a steel you know... #justsaying

This thread got me thinking that tubbies may be worth a try, provided the price is right. Would you mind sending me a pm with prices on these demo/1yr old wheels you refer to?
