Somerset West Fires (now including paarl and stellies/jonkers)

I struggle to believe the arson theory. There is another fire that started on du toits kloof this afternoon. It started in the most bizarre and unbelievable way. A caravan lost its right wheel as it approached the tunnel entrance on the Worcester side. This resulted in sparking metal on tar which subsequently ignited the dry Bush on the side of the road in two places.

The mountains are so dry at the moment with this wind any little spark is dangerous.

All the best to those affected by and fighting these fires.

Was hiking in Jonkershoek this morning and was thinking that a fire there today would have been a disaster. The wind was really pumping.

Cannot believe it was coincidence that these fires started simultaneously by chance. This is terrible.

Will check things out when I get to the office in Somerset West tomorrow morning.

Good luck to all you guys in the affected area.

I don't think that firefighters started this fire. Most probably delinquents looking for illusions of grandeur. People that want to feel powerful and like to see destruction, and know that they were responsible for it.

As Slowbee mentioned. There were witnesses that the fire were started by arsonists.

Plain old evil arson seems way more likely.

Starting a fire to make money? Ja sure.

There are easier and quicker ways to make a buck if you are going to break the law.

But a good story is always lekker to tell.

In KZN I've witnessed volunteer firefighters whom I knew by name, driving away in their private vehicles after starting bush fires in Winter. Then you see them posing in the local paper. Tried to report it and got nowhere (obviously). Not saying this is the case here, the guys who fought the last big fire are true heroes. But it unfortunately does happen.

It is getting real bad now. The SE is pumping here in Strand. Probably gusting to 35 - 40 knots.

The firefighters are in for a real tough night. Tomorrow morning there may be a brief lull in the SE. Let's hope for a chance to get this under control.

My friend sent me this a few hours ago all just up the road from her.. it was getting a bit worrying for her and now I can't get hold of her..[emoji53] hope all is okay

Gen, that was this afternoon in bizweni. Nothing compared to the crap we are dealing with now.

Tre Donne estate is being evacuated. Considering this is an upmarket residential estate, with equastrian facilities things are mad. A single road in and out, *bloody wannabee make money photographers* stopping everythwere and the traffic is gridlocked.

We have opened our practice doors for animals in need. And so far we have a few. And I completely understand. When the chips are down, just open the gates and hope the animals can look after themselves.

not likely. the wind has totally changed direction and is blowing everything back into residential areas again.

the fire has now spread and split.

it is well over han se kop and into the Hotentots Nature reserve. The wind is throwing embers everywhere !! and sporadic fires are all over the place.

Also heard reports that the fire has run round the back of lourensford and heading onto the saddle
