Advice Needed On 1 x 10 Drivetrain

Hello all,

So today I realized I do not have enough gears for the climbs I did today...

My current setup is Race Face Narrow Wide 34T with an 11-36T SLX cassette.

So I am not really sure what to do? Should I save up for a new chainring & cassette (probably the more expensive route) or go back to 2 x 10? I do not have the chainrings, but I can make a plan to get it from my friend how converted to 1 x 10 too (same bike than mine). Willing to hear your guys input. Would like to go the cheapest route possible.

Thanks.

Just get a 42 teeth expander sprocket and a 16 teeth sprocket from Rapide.  Cheapest option and you should be fine.  If you still not ok then you can get the 32 tooth chainring as well.

Rapide 30T NW ultra light ring

*** This is one of many ways to sort your problem but here goes:

Firstly this will help you a lot on your climbs

Secondly you will loose some top end BUT spinning high cadence is good for your muscles anyway and your probs going to be spinning out at around 53kp/h IF on a 29er which is still pleanty fast.

Thridly If winning races and being a speed freak is not your top priority there is no reason to go bigger.

Today people with small chainrings get discriminated against even though they can keep up 95% of the time.

Even consider a 32t oval.

Don't suffer !! Your bike is there for enjoyment.

Good luck.

This ^

Thank you! I am by no means a racer. I just love riding a nice bike and to enjoy the views, and for fitness purposes. Good point you made there.

Will quickly check where I can buy that chainring. Not familiar with the brand though.

I would rather get a wide range Rapidé Sunrace 11-42 cassette and keep the 34T chain ring. Better range than the 11-36 and more even spread than slapping an extender on. I'm sure your rear derailleur will handle the range since it came off a 2X.

The only problem in stopping me from doing this is my money... If I had more money I would have gone for it, but the 30T is more affordable for me.

Go the Rapidé 30t route. Awesome product and priced very good. I have had raceface n/w rings and now have 2 Rapidé rings on my bikes. Will never again waste money on a big brand front ring.

What size wheels?

Your 34t chainring with standard 11-36 chainring makes things quite tough on a 29er but should be OK for a 26 inch bike.

Your cheapest fix is to go back to 2x10. Next cheapest is to change to a 32t chainring but if on a 29er this will still be tough on the hills and you will spin out quicker. You really need a wider range cassette.

You cant convert an SLX 10spd cassette with a range extender because it doesn't have a separately removable 15t or 17t cog to make space for a 40t/42t cog.

So if budget is tight go back to 2x10 until your current chain and cassette are worn out. In the meantime save for a wide range 10 speed cassette like the Sunrace and a pair of new chains to go with. It is cheaper than buying a new XT cassette and converting it with a range extender cog.

You can also start saving for a 1x11 SLX conversion kit. This will cost more but comes with a new Shifter, RD, chain and 11-40 or 11-42 cassette. The SLX M7000 GS RD can also accommodate the new 11-46 XT cassette but avoid the long cage M7000 (SLX) RD as it is for the SLX 3x systems which remain 10 speed.

I went the range extender route when I converted to 1x10 because I already had a lightly used XT cassette that was suitable for conversion.

This advice not workable with the OPs SLX cassette which does not have removable 15t or 17t cogs.

I have gone through the same process as you. If I were in your situation, I would go back to 2X10. It is not that complicated, gives you all the range you will ever need and you can save on all future cassettes - standard 11-34 cassettes are cheap as from CRC or zie Germans.

I have gone for all the aftermarket cassette changes and different front rings etc etc. At the end of the day it is more expensive, one never has the same range on 1X10, especially if you like bombing down hills as well as steep climbing, and what was the matter with 2X10 anyway?

I ride with a 32t Rapide Oval ring and 11-36 on a 650B and seems to get me up most climbs. Oval ring is cool.

Very interesting, because I am still deciding between the 30T or 32T. Will keep this in mind. Going to borrow a 30T today and test it out.

Great idea , then go do the same route you did yesterday and compare the two.
