Raleigh bashing

problem with raleigh is that you can get it anywhere....even p'np......or you used to be able to.  I think that they should maybe rebrand their top end bikes and keep the cheapies seperate.  I have had two but must say that my Scott is still best.

Any "top end" cyclist will surely know that he cannot buy a "top end" Raleigh at Pick and Pay or Makro. It is only the suurtiete who use that in their postings to try and make Raleigh look bad. They rarely succeed.

not trying to make raleigh look bad at all....have great respect for them in fact....all I am saying is that if you were able to buy a Mercedes from any general dealer it would not have had the same value that it has...purely an idea of why some people don't like raleigh...may or may not be true.

My biggest gripe is that the 'looks' of the bike changes year in and out.  I had one of the first RC8000 (D/A 9 speed).  Great bike, but the very next year it was k@k as the "new" one came out.  NOT NICE!

Ya, I know a Guy who had just bought himself one of those original orange team issue ones, and the "new" team bike was released... He was spitting mad...

All boils down to exclusitivity (damn this Ingelse taal). The harder it is to get, the better the image. Raleighs are given a bad name because it is readily available...

Some people think that because you can get a raleigh anywhere it reflects badly on the brand. What? surely the opposit applies, you can get it anywhere because there is a huge market and bike shops know that.

The bottom line for me is that you would rather swing your leg over something hot and Italian, than something old and british

All I can say is that I bought my RC3000 in 2003 and it is nou almost 5 years later and I am still very happy with the bike.  Yes I would like to buy something lighter and better but I have other priorities at the moment in my life so that has to hang on for a little while.  And should that day come when I can afford a better bike, my old Raleigh will still be responsible for getting me to work and back.  40 odd thousand kilometers later and she is still as stable and trustworthy as ever.

Yes, some people do bash me for it but I don't give a hoot (I remember Onehill and BMCfan's shock to see a TCS rider on a Raleigh at the Argussmiley36.gif).  I did not buy the bike because of a fashion trend.  I bought the bike because I wanted to.

A large percentage of us ride bikes way above our ability. Its an image thing. Just like buying a Porsche, you will never push it to its true potential. If we were sensible we would all be riding Raleighs as truth be told there is nothing wrong with them.

*ducking flying bottles already*

I started cycling on a Raleigh RC3000 - and I have absolutely no complaints.

The Tiagra Groupset was fine, did the job - in fact, the heavy frame made me work harder and probably got me fit quicker . . .

.... BUT I upgraded last year to something light, white and Italian and will NEVER NEVER look back......

There are two groups of cyclists in this world -

those who would ride a Raleigh (and some do!)

and

those who would not (no matter how much bang for your buck you got!)

Toyota understood this principle very well - which is why they created the Lexus brand! If only the marketing people at Raleigh would create an up-market model and give it a real interesting name, add 20% to the price tag (the exclusivity factor!) and Bob's your uncle! Threads like this would be unnecessary!

My first proper mountain bike (in 2006) was the Raleigh RM7 and I bought it because of the "value for money" element. A full XT bike with a Ritchey cockpit and a Fox fork for R 10k!!

Most of the parts of that bike which has since been put out to pasture are now adorning a Merida.

Bob said in another thread i had to bash raleigh.

raleigh is a load of nonsense, handles badly and breaks, its components are weak, no support. Frames break, doesnt go up hills or down hills.

this is a bending of something I have no idea about.  never ridden a raleigh, nor owned one - this is an opinion given to me by someone else. Bob said I must do it ......
