That is crazy, thought the shimano ones were proper solid! Have you had a pedal strike round a corner before?

Thats the only way I could think of causing fatigue in the shaft.

Glad you are ok enough to type on the hub!

Also broke my Ultegra crank arm (split in half) on the drive side while standing going up a short but steeeeep incline.

Unit was 14 months old and I was told by the shop they've never seen anything like it (looking at the above samples from 2011 and 2013 I'm surprised) and it's out of warrentee so unfortunately? Anyway, I argued I've never been in any accident (pedals and rest of bike having no damage to it), so the arm could have only broken because of a manufacturing defect in the metal from the start.

Although the LBS initially gave me grief (and we won't mention the name of said LBS due to sensitivities on this forum) Shimano importer eventually agreed to replace the crank only but not the blades. They eventually had to replace the blades as the flange cover did not fit properly due to brake damage.

So ... not the first time and from other examples just seen here, ...

This concerns me deeply

Agreed.

Been on Sram for a while now but was considering returning to some of the newer Shimano.

Not so sure anymore...

Seen a Dura Ace 7800 broken like that before. Rare, but it can and does happen. So rare that I'd say there is little reason to eschew Shimano cranks.

after watching a mechanic in a bike shop trying to loosen a crank and BB in a bike shop i am surprised there arent more broken cranshafts and carbon frames...at the time i wasnt concerned about the customers crank...i was more concerned the frame was gona break from the pounding with the hammer.
