Hello everyone

Can I get your views on how safe a ride along the R44 from Stellies to Wellington is?

In addition, I may consider to extend the route back via Durbanville (R312 & R302) to Blouberg.

Thanks in advance...

Just be careful, according to my strava, there is a dodgy guy from JHB in somerset west at the moment and he has been spotted om the R44. Normally dressed in black and hardly visible.

JHB?

Don't worry. He is referring to patchelicous who is prowling the roads around Somerset West.

The r44 is IMO one of the safer roads. Although cars do tend to travel around very high speeds between Klapmuts any Wellington. Stay left.

But I've ridden that road quite a bit and I'll do it again. Just be careful next to Cloetesville. A mate of mine was robbed there a couple of years back.

Generally those are safe routes but with all the bike jackings going on lately, one can never be sure where the bastids will strike next. I've had issues before at those block of flats as you leave Stellenbosch on the R44 when 3 guys tried pelting us with beer bottles. Sadly the bottles were empty

Don't worry, I'm at the airport on my way back.

Compared to most other roads, and especially the JHBs ones, the R44 is a pleasure. Obviously all roads have dangers, but there are lots of cyclists on the R44

Amazing response everyone.

THANKS A LOT...

Any comments on the R312/R302 from R44 side heading to Durbanville?

Very much the same as the R44, big shoulder, fairly safe. Be careful around Cloetesville, Phisantekraal and Du Noon, some attacks there in the past

That is a notorious section and they do that to break up the bunch so they can strike.

I also heard they toss bottles but not at ppl but just so innocently into the road causing punctures.

On the hand bo road is safe one is just less busy than the other but the same tjops are on the road these days.

We cyclist are vehicle drivers too and sometimes we can also behave like tjops especially in peak morning traffic from my experience.
