Adventure Cycles - Welvanpas - permit grievance - Bad experience

Hi All.

In terms of the Bikehub rant policy, I have taken up the issue with Pieter van Wyk, owner of Adventure Cycles Wellington and curator of the Welvanpas mtb trials.

I recently saw the post for the Welvanpas mtb trials permits (see image 1) on the Adventure Cycle facebook page. Wednesday 25Jan, I called the shop to confirm the post and the detail. Per the post I was interested in the R800 option for 2 permits.

On Friday 27Jan, I arrived at 16:20 at the shop money in hand to purchase my permits for the year. The sales lady informed me that I misinterpreted the post and that the R800 option is only valid if the 2 people are family (parent+child / husband+wife / 2 children).

Obviously i disputed and agrued my point. The sales lady made it clear that I either pay the R1200 for my permits or I am welcome to leave it. The post on Adventure cycles facebook page changed (see image 2) at around 17:30.

I contacted the farm. The farm owners wife was extremely nice and helpful and said we can ride today and sort out the issue with Pieter after our ride.

After our ride I call Pieter, who frankly and aburptly stated that the pricing is whatever he decides it is. The facebook post is not a advert and I am welcome to purchase 2 permits at R600 each or leave it.

I dont want to argue the legality of a facebook post as a advert. If it is, it is..if not, then its not.

I dont want to ride without paying for it.

I want to promote and support local business.

I JUST WANT TO RIDE MY BIKE.

For me this experience leaves a sour taste in the mouth. If im wrong, then im wrong.

I have Pieter' cell no and will forward the link to this post to his. I welcome his input.

Like I said. If im wrong, I will be the 1st person to apologies and offer to buy Pieter a beer.

Sad kms on my bike today.

Looking forward to happy kms tomorrow.

Thx

D

public relations

noun

plural noun: public relations

  1. the professional maintenance of a favourable public image by a company or other organization or a famous person.

"public relations is often looked down on by the media"

    • the state of the relationship between a company or other organization or person and the public.

"companies justify the cost in terms of improved public relations"

obviously wasn't worth a few bucks to just let one miscommunication slide and then correct the FB post and not look like total d**ks

So why not just buy 1 for you and the other for your wife ? sorted

Because my wife doesn't ride and Im a honest person...and in our sport ppl hv won TdF title under a doping cloud...its time to bring honesty and integrity back...

Not sure what you DO want out of this OemD?

Now that you know this was a mistake on FB (and an obvious one at that) why do you still feel entitled to punish them for that mistake and try to fleece R400 out of them? Even resorting to social media to badmouth them

Is this how you support local business?

But to answer on the legality, that error on the fb post does not = a legal obligation from their side to sell a permit to you at a loss. I suggest move on.

I think businesses must stop underestimate the influence and buying power of customers. Also well known brands must be careful with brand custodians. Apart from that, I think this cycling shop missed an opportunity. The OP could have influenced a lot of his riding mates to buy permits...

Thank you for ur view. I understand and I have moved on.

Just 1 clarification...if the permit was R1000, I would buy 1...and im not trying to fleece anything.

I just want to ride my bike.

Thats all.

I don't think it is quite so apparent from the advert that the two people must be family. It says persone and doesn't stipulate family.

I'm not a lawyer but I reckon it is good business to take responsibility for the errors you make like on this advert.

That having been said, 100 bucks for a family to ride the welvanpas trails whenever you want for a year is a bargain if you live close enough to get there regularly.

I might have grumbled about the ad but i would just hoes the bucks and go riding

But hang on. Doesn't the tygerberg membership give one access to welvanpas? Why don't you just get a membership which costs less anyway, and ride welvanpas for free.

+1

Which makes it a bargain of note! I love my tygerberg board!

Sorry if my post was harsh. Im in a foul mood about the cyclist that was killed today on Bottelary.

They could have been nicer to you but I don't see that they have an obligation to give you discount.

They should have honored the sale of 2 for R800 and then changed it on FB.

Simple PR.

Btw be aware of what you say on FB as it is legal and binding.

Facebook may be the be all and end all of some people's lives but it does not supersede the South African law of contract.

No invitation to do business on Facebook has ANY legal force even if it was an advert.
