So SWAMBO okay-ed funds to buy a new dual suspension.

I am moving from a hard tail to a softer ride for the TB 2017. I think old age is making me soft.

Looking in the classifieds there does not seem to be a lot of xl bike in my price range.

So I started looking at new bikes also. With a nice discount from the store  I can get OK bikes at a reasonable price. What do you guys feel is the route to go. New or second hand?

Thx

As DM noted above...

Short term: The new bike will make you feel like Bill Gates walking out of the store. This will last until you get to ride it the first time and then all your friends have seen it, and now it is second hand... Still a great feeling though

Long term: Buying second hand (if you are not to hasty) you can get super value for money. Make sure the bike is clean and as perfect as can be, then you can have the same feeling with the mates. Just not at the shop.

But you would've gotten a much better ride, with more bragging power, instead of a quick high at the shop.

I would sit around and wait for that super bike, at a great price.

Hope this helps

2nd hand often offers better value.

However, given your size, you may not find too many available as you've already suggested.

At the same time, that size may count in your favour at LBS where they are possibly not moving that many either, and eager to do you a good deal.

Bottom line, if you like it and need it/want it, buy it.! New or 2nd hand.

Hi mulmi,

I have bought secondhand for my entire life so far and had no problems at all.

Ranging from cell phones, watches, computer components, monitors, cameras, camera lenses, bikes, etc

I saved so much money thus far compared to going brand new.

Definitely agree with Cycling Major's post, spot on.

Your biggest problem will be size, it would be substantially easier if you were a medium or large.

Im a fan of buying 2nd hand if the condition is good, you save yourself a bunch and can do some nice upgrades with the difference.
