Only one complaint with organization. The race should have started earlier. Sun was high in the sky by 07:32. My aim was a 5:45 being a 40 minute swim with T1, 2:45 cycle an 2:20 run. I run slow.

Swim went well although I suspect current was a lil against us. As I was leaving the surf I got dumped an was covered in sand which got everywhere so showered on exit the surf but sand remained with throughout. The shower in the hotel is testimony to that.

Bike started well, it's a ni ce course but I noticed my HR was climbing all the time. Due to the intense heat no doubt. CBlake came passed me while I was having a pee at the turn around at 65 kays. At this point I was experiencing elevated HR so took the last 20 kays relatively gently.

Started the run at 3:42 on the clock. Idea was to keep HR at 110 to 120 but this proved impossible as it kept spiking. I normally have a RHR of under 40 an very constant. Decided to walk one dustbin length an run one aiming for a 6 hour or 6:10. Heat kept nudging up an walked more than I ran. Long story short clock was on 6:37 when I finished. Will check official results. Some days don't go as planned an that's life. The heat sapped me today. A learning curve. 5 hours later my HR still high.

4 weeks to IM. Take a day or 2 off an a massage.

Organization was great, the ocean was absolutely superb so good to get a swim in. Hope this event is completely sold out next year. Cycle route much better than IM route too an very little drafting.

Well done ICM , good effort to finish. Heard of a few lads get hammered by the heat. Was proper hot this morning. Agreed , could easy start at 6.

Lots of non-finishers today. Heat was the main killer I think. Also heard they ran our of ice on the run section so all the water was warm.

The heat might have contributed but you had elevated HR and the constant increase makes me think you went in overtrained or just on a tired body which is normal in the case with IM training. The thing of doing a Half IM a month before is something that I am not sure of and the fact that your HR did not hit recovery like it should makes me think you were tired going in or your body is fighting an infection. As this may be the fact that you did the race before the IM will do a lot for your mental preparation  but your body is trying to tell you something.

ICM, didn't you say you were coming down with something a week or so ago from riding in the rain? I agree with Wheelsuck. Maybe a longer rest period is needed before you pick up your training again.

Edit:

Then again - reading how hectic the heat was now. I think I underestimated how bad the heat was. Thank goodness my first HIM is in June...

Well done though ICM, looked like it was brutal.

Could be. Had a tickle in throat last week but felt ok suspect I am over training too. So gonna chill a bit this week. Did a short run this morning at HR stayed flat at around 115 where I thought it would yesterday. An while I was there on the promenade I sommer went for a swim too ;). Difficult to resist the ocean.

Will rest a bit in the week an run Sarens Sunday then off to Durban for work next week an some more ocean swims.

HR still slightly elevated at around 52. Will wait for it to dip under 40 before serious training resumes.

Was a fantastic Durban Ultra. Really well organized an the ocean was superb. 26 degrees thus no wetsuits which is my preference anyway. Great to be involved in this sport.

Roll on 2 April.

I'll throw my 2 cents in here too..

Firstly, starting the race at 7:30 is ridiculous, easily could have been 90 minutes earlier. And that was my only real gripe with the race..

I set out to do Durbs without any real time goal, all I wanted to achieve was to feel better than the catastrophic state I was in at the end of Midlands, thanks to being near-death dehydrated. So redemption was the only goal, plus a little mental reassurance pre IM.

This was my first swim without a wetsuit as well! So the nerves were certainly building on the beach. That being said it was the best swim I've ever had. Water was beautiful, sea was calm for the most part and crystal clear. Really enjoyed it.

Bike course is great. Fast and flat, with great road surface. My plan was to ride more steadily and force-feed and (over)hydrate myself. Like Midlands I knew it was going to get steamy so I wanted to be prepared, and test a new nutrition approach.

When I set out for the run I felt surprisingly good. I almost managed to my normal 21k pace. Many many sponges were used, many many water sachets were sprayed. My garmin maxed out at 38 degrees and it felt every bit as hot. Wind picked up as the day wore on which helped immensely.

Overall I thought the organisation was excellent. Aid stations were well equiped for the onslaught of overheating athletes. Transition worked efficiently. Road closure is always a bonus. A great weekend.

Man it was super hot!

This was my first HIM distance after having done 2 sprint events, my first proper open water swim and what a day for a first open water swim. The sea was like my swimming pool!

Bike was good but the run killed me, i was done. The heat on the run was just relentless and i was just going from WP to WP, filling my suit with ice until they ran out........but luckily on my lap 3 they managed to stock up again. But by this time it was a hard mental slog to the finish for me.

Atleast I can now say I have completed my first HIM

Just as a precaution go and get yourself tested for Bilharzia.

yip, just the half :) might even reduce that to 10kays and run with my wife.

Just as a matter of interest I went and analysed my HR on a number of runs. I have included 4 HR graphs here. One from Saturday (pre ultra) , one from Monday (post Ultra) and one from a BRICK run I did last week. And of course the graph from during the ULTRA. Looking at some of my long distance runs my HR generally remains constant for a certain pace. While certainly not scientific and when viewed in isolation really makes little sense its interesting to see the fluctuations. The other 3 are gentle paced runs at around 6:45 per km pace which I was hoping ot emulate during the Ultra run. Even at 9 minutes to a kay pace my HR was way higher than it should of been.  The organisers reckon it got to around 40 degrees. While I have no way of confirming that it certainly was a lot hotter than I am used to. Maybe some more heat training needed. On the bike I was pushing to maintain my normal pace on the course and maybe I should of slowed down and cycled to my HR instead.  Live an learn.
