Wheelset for Gravel Grinder

Hi Guys

Bought a 2016 Giant TCX SLR 2 a few weeks back.  The bike comes with a pretty heavy wheelset a just over 2.1kg.  Looking for something closer to 1.6kg.  As you may know, road disc wheelsets are pretty hard to come by.

So my question is, can I use a MTB wheelset.  Looking to run between 35-45C tires.  Is there anything to look out for when buying a MTB wheelset for such a bike?  I suppose it should be a 29er wheelset.  The bike uses Shimano 105 5800 groupset.

Will any American Classic or Stans wheelset work?  Should I look at internal rim width?

Thanks in advance

A quality mtb wheelset will work just fine - although you don't want to go too wide.

Also check that the max tyre pressure the rim can take will be fine for your planned tire pressure

I purchased a Rapid 29 wheel from Wayne at Rapide and it is a fair price. Lighter than my MTB wheels and run gatorskins at 6bar plus on the road. No probs. Lekker wheels and the service is tops.

I have 19mm MTB rims with 1.8 knobblies but never go to this pressure. Be careful.......

I had the same question a while back. Hublabd recommended that I go with MTB wheels.

So I got a set of Roval Carbon Controls, put some Maxxis Rambler 40c on there, run them at the wheels max of 3 Bar.

Love them!

I got some Rapide TR29 wheels. Awesome wheelset, and they look good too.

Just note that it, and most MTB wheels, won't take an 11spd road cassette - need to machine it down 1.8mm (11spd mod).

To answer your question, some of the American Classic wheelsets have internal widths that are simply too wide if you want a versatile wheelset; ideally you want to be able to slap on some 28mm/32mm/35mm slicks for if you feel like riding a long road etc. and at the same time switch to 35mm/45mm knobblies at will.

For the above reason, I wouldn't buy a wheel that is more than 25mm wide internally, and the Rapide's 21mm internal width is working out great for me. I use 32mm slicks, Specialized Roubaix Pro, for 95% of my mileage and 42mm knobblies for adventure time.

American Classic makes a Tubeless Ready disc specific road wheelset which are available locally for around R12k, someone tried to sell them to me in my LBS the other day but I don't remember the model name (lol no ways am I paying R12k for wheels!)

So it really depends on what you want at the end of the day.

Thanks for the replies guys

Seems like I need something with 19-22mm internal rim width, but can withstand up to 5-6bar of pressure if I choose to run narrower slicks

Correct. But maybe only 4-5bar if you run 28c.

Yup I'm running my 32mm slicks at 4-5bar (road condition/weather dependant). 5bar is actually quite harsh @ 32mm

We sold quite a few of the American Classic Victory 30 Tubeless Disc Wheelsets at R4495 a set lately for Gravel Grinder owners.

Hi Naas

I see the Victory 30 has 18.1mm internal rim width.  What is the widest tubeless tires I will be able to fit on these?

I have 19mm internal width Hope Hoops and I have run 25mm GP4000s with tubes and 40mm tyres tubeless. No problem.

According to Challenge you can run 28 to 50mm tyres on a 19mm rim. If you want to run tyres in that range I wouldn't go wider then 21 internal.

A 25mm internal rim is way too wide for a 28 tyre. You can mount it and inflate it but the danger is that it could roll off the rim under load. I know of two occasions where this has happened to riders.
