Breaking Spokes

I keep breaking spokes on my carbon frame road bike & and a proper creaking sound coming from my bottom bracket. Thought my BB section needed a service but now I'm wondering if both of these issues are frame related? Too much flex?

What kind of BB does your bike have?

What wheelset is it, what is the rim type and spike count. Do you break spokes on front or rear wheel?

When a spoke has broken previously, which I'm assuming they have, did you replace just the broken spoke or the ones next to it too?

We need more info here man.

Spoke breakage is generally caused by metal fatigue when the wheel hasn't been properly stress relieved during the build.

Get the wheel rebuilt by someone who knows what stress relieving is.

As for the BB, more info is needed. But creaks are almost impossible to diagnose by remote control.

If you break more than one spoke on a wheel you should have it re-spoked.  The fatigue problem usually manifests itself on one side of the wheel.  If you have J bend spokes you may be able to lace the wheel with a pattern that better suits your size and riding style.

As for the BB noise there are options for improving the situation.  All depends on the frame and BB type.

This is interesting. It keeps on happening to me, all breaking on the rear wheel and this happening on level smooth roads with no apparent reason.

But please explain the fatigue problem. My bike is less than a year old, but had a branch stuck in the back wheel which caused some damage and bent one spoke.

Could it be that the tension in the other spokes was incorrect due to the replacement of the first one?

Something I have learnt ...never use a round spoke to replace a flat spoke in a wheel ...it doesn't work...within 50-80 km you will need to carry a spoke tool to retention the wheel...especially if you are a fat oke...you have to replace with a flat spoke and tension it properly...fulcrum...Mavic makes no difference.

It's most likely that the wheel wasn't stress relieved properly when it was built, but it's also possible that the replacement spokes weren't stress relieved when the wheel was repaired and these are the ones that are breaking.

Just interesting you say that, this wheel has 1 round spoke ... Just because I was in a hurry and couldn't wait ????

Never had to true it since it was put in ... And I'm NOT a lightweight [emoji36]

Just lucky?

and if the lbs mechanic breaks a couple spokes while attempting to true a wheel ?

maybe you can give us some insight into...replacing flat spokes with rounds spokes when the mechanic breaks a spoke...tensile strength etc...i have had it happen twice...first time with the fulcrum wheels (since back from J&J...thumbs up) and now with mavics...no stock of replacement spokes in SA i am told...so for now there are round mavic spokes with loctite and 50 - 80 km into a ride even on the front wheel the spokes rattle loose?

maybe...lets wait to see the response from mr miaggi wheel builder

i do 10 000 km on my bike and dont get a puncture...this weekend i get 2 punctures...a blowout...bubblegum on my wheel and loose spokes.

the scary part...the worn cheapie vredstein tyres (full of cuts from glass) did the mileage... i replaced them with new gatoskins on friday night.
