Noob question about Western Cape road race calendar

Andydude is correct that you can move up or down a CAT but the WPCA may object and shift you to the group that they feel you should be racing in.

For instance if you are easily finishing with the CAT2 group but then suddenly drop down to CAT3 to win prize money week in and week out they may then push you up.

They are also very strict when it comes to racing CAT1 and especially so on the Crits or track where space is limited.

You don't get a number board anymore. You'll get a pin-on cloth race number for the season.

If you still have an old Mobii number board, it won't work either. You'll have to purchase a Mobii timing chip for your front fork. Something else to remember about CAT3 .. there's an inter-club aspect to racing in this category.

Oh ok I see. So if I buy the number and the chip online, do I collect at the first race?

Very cool that the clubs race against each other in CAT 3. I won't be racing for the win, so helping someone in my club would be cool.

Yip, you collect them at the next event from the registration table.

Ok well I think I'll do the Big Bay race in CAT 3 and see how it goes. If it's too easy, I'll move up. If I get dropped, I quit.  :D

You should do really well in CAT3 and eventually move up to CAT2 as you are nice and strong.

Some more 5am sufferfest rides and you will only get stronger.

PPA is not affiliated to CSA or WPCA as far as I know.

Tygerberg MTB club however is affiliated to WPCA.

OK, Tygerberg MTB club being affiliated to WPCA was a nice surprise/bonus for me as it was obviously not my motivation for joining the mtb club

I now have a csa membership, a profile on the wpva website. Ready to be dropped in cat 3 at the race track on the 9th.

Anybody else from tygerberg mtb racing cat 3? Maybe we race together?
