Chain links

I suppose I am asking a question with a very obvious answer but just need to confirm.

I can use any third party chain links on a chain (example Shimano) as long as the link is specific to the chain width (9, 10 or 11 speed chains).

Looking in buying some chain links for the next time I replace a chain I would rather use links instead of pins.

Correct - you will find that some may struggle a bit more than others. Personally I find that a powerlink works well across the board.

Best not to use chain link - have one in my pack for emergency only.

I always fit quick links to chains - customers included.  I know that this is a no no with Shimano but how the hell do you clean a chain properly on the bike - or set the limit screws.  Benefits far outweigh the disadvantages.  Speed specific and you are good to go.

I have the fancy Campy 11 speed pin fitting tool and a packet of pins - used three times.  Cost R1800!

If a pin fails count your blessings.  It probably saved your hanger the or RD itself.

What would the disadvantages be?  Till now I have only heard positives and the reason for me fitting would also be for the cleaning.   So I am keen to find out what the down side of it could be.
