Action camera advice

Looking to buy a action for my road bike for several reasons but need some advice on the following specs.

1. Camera must record for 3 hours at least.

2. Ant compatible

3. If I go gopro is it easy to overlay my garmin data on the video.

4. Wind noise reduction will be nice.

5. Waterproofing will also be nice to be used in swimming pool.

Recording can be 720p but frames must be less than 25 prefer 30.

Unit must also have fittings to fit my Giant carbon SLR handlebars.

I've got tomtom bandit. Its nice but i think you might struggle to get 3 hours. Also the mount is only head and front bar so video does not look as cool as those videos recorded from chest strap mounts.editing on your phone sucks as the app only allows you to make a 2min vid. Cutting 3 hour ride to 2mins! K@k man. Other than those negtives uhmmm good value for money i guess

Au contraire regarding the chest strap. The Bandit works fine with a chest harness.

You need to download the TomTom Bandit Studio program for your PC. It allows you to create longer videos that include all of the overlays that you would want to have in your video.

OP, have a look at this video I made on Saturday with my Bandit.

P.S. I did a poor job of setting up the angle of the mount, so the camera was incorrectly focussed on my bike when I was out of the saddle.

It's in Belgium, so perhaps a bit far for you.

I bought a cheap Chinese-brand chest strap that is compatible with GoPros. The attachment is long enough for you to comfortably fit the Bandit. You can also use some of your existing GoPro attachments to space it out even further.

There currently isn't a Bandit-specific chest strap.

Get on to Gum Tree and look for the original Garmin Virb Elite - I've seen them going for between R2200 and R2500 for new old stock.

I have one and it is brilliant - have added a sample of video below. It comes standard with all the info on the right:

And then get this stem cap mount:

Garmin VIRB ULTRA 30 will provide all those things! I have been an avid GoPro fan for a long time but they missed the boat with the new 5 series which i bought into BUT....I now have the ULTRA 30 and altho the specs are very similar, it's so much easier to work with, the UI is simple and it just works, from setup to integration of all the usual Garmin stats Including heart rate belt, Garmin Fenix 3 for remote control, to hooking up with your phone via the app (something that is at best difficult and frustrating with the latest GoPro app). Audio is good, a complete fail with the latest GoPro when using mounts and filming fast action scenes. The VIRB software is easy to use and the best way to overlay the data but I find it basic so I use Adobe Premier Pro and sometimes Final Cut Pro for editing.

The big plus is that the camera mounts are all compatible with the GoPro stuff and you only need the Garmin-specific "skeleton" housing for bare mounting and of course spare batteries.

For mounting, stay away from direct mounting on the bike itself...the nature of these cameras is that they are for close-up action and any vibration even with new built-in stabilization software, makes for a shaky picture if mounted like that...rather mount on your body via chest harness or your head which has a natural stabilisation affect. Direct mount works ok for short clips thrown into a mash-up for effect but not prolonged video.

Resolution goes up to 4K and is spectacular but only if viewed on the right machine that can handle the bytes per second. The go-to res is 1080p and 2.7K at a push both supported by Youtube if that's where you going to show your vids. Youtube compresses the hell out of your original video so as long as you have a good quality HD clip at high sample rates, it will look good on Youtube.

Editing is where you will have to spend a lot of time, if you want to make good use of your footage. For Windows, the free onboard Movie Maker does a fairly simple job, Sony Vegas is a good one, simple but powerful and lots of support on the net with a large following developing templates and free stuff. For more advanced editing Adobe Premier Pro and After Effects is massively powerful and used by a lot of professional movie editors (Win and Mac) and then there's Imovie free with a Mac and Final Cut Pro.

Have fun, get the gear and USE it, the stuff is so user friendly these days that you can carry your camera everywhere...the effort is the editing......

Check out some of my stuff on my Youtube Channel, MrCapediver.

How did you overlay the speed and route ?  Or is this part of the original recording ?

According to UCI rules you are not allowed to mount a camera on your helmet or chest so it must be on the bike.

How do the pro's get that video so smooth?

Should I rather go for gopro 5 and then overlay the data?

I use the Cycliq Fly12 which is designed specifically for cycling. It includes a 400 lumen light. Perfect for road bikes. I haven't tried it on an MTB or in the pool.

Bar mount only.  Bracket for Giant available from racewaredirect.co  not com.

1080p or 720p with 60, 45 and 30 fps.

Micro SD card up to 64gb gives around 10 hours light on low flash with HD video.  Video is stored in 5 minute segments so editing is a breeze.

App for overlay is IOS and Android, using strava data for overlay.

Video recorded yesterday: https://twitter.com/booth_rob/status/846451833270747136/video/1

For rear I use Fly6, 720p micro SD card up to 32gb for around 6 hours light on low flash with HD video.  Video is stored in 10 minute segments so editing is a breeze. No app, no overlay, just connect to PC to view.

The overlays are done with the TomTom Studio PC program.
