Hi Guys :)

New here and soon to be riding!

I would like to purchase a bike for general trail riding with friends/family.

I have done some research and come across 3 bikes. Needing everyones opinions on which would be better.

Silverback Spectra Sport R6500

Momsen AL029 R7000

GT karakoram sport R7500

Out of all of these, it seems the silverback has the better forks and the same general quality components as the competing Momsen and GT, although cheaper. I think the silverback spectra comp comes with air forks at the same price as the GT.

So... Which one? :)

Hi Maddy, an air fork will definately be a deciding factor if that is the case. But also have a look at the second hand classifieds. For 7.5K you can find a bike with far superior components to the bikes you have mentioned. Goodluck.

Completely off topic. Love that R1

Thanks guys, i shall also consider the second hand market. Other than this site, where would be the best alternative website to look for second hand bikes? I am a bit apprehensive to gumtree.

Lastly, is it generally ok to buy second hand mountain bikes? I worry about hairline cracks on the frame that aren't generally visible immediately. Also, does the manufacturer warranty apply to the second owner?

Don't buy anywhere else 2nd hand but the hub. The judgement here is harsh and quick and scammers are not dealt with lightly.

As for the warranty, normally that does not apply to a second owner. However a reputable person on the hub should be bona fide when it comes to a sale (hopefully).

Nothing wrong with buying 2nd hand imo - I went the 2nd hand route in case I find that cycling is not for me. I even bought my bike off Gumtree. Only regret is that I should have maybe researched a bit more before buying the bike.

I would not go for that one.

That bike will only frustrate you once you start putting km s on it.

Look for something 29 er (29" wheels) with 10 speed.

Why would he get frustrated on it?

Going to have a look at the axis a20 this afternoon. I'm hoping it's in decent condition as it seems to be a pretty solid bike

Buy 2nd hand for more bang for your bucks. Ask around for a good bikeshop in your area and ask the seller to have the bike inspected at the your bikeshop.

If your riding for fun and exercise get a aluminium frame. If you spend R7K on a 2nd hand bike with aluminium frame chance are good that you will pick something up with really good components.

But shop around and be patient.
